🌷 SPRING ELECTRICAL SAFETY CHECKLIST
Spring is the perfect time to inspect your home’s electrical system! Use this checklist to keep your family safe and prevent costly repairs.
Indoor Electrical Safety
□ Test Your Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Press the test button on each detector and replace batteries if needed. Detectors older than 10 years should be replaced entirely.
□ Test GFCI Outlets
Push the “test” button on outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor locations. The “reset” button should pop out. If it doesn’t, the outlet needs replacement.
□ Inspect All Outlets & Switches
Look for these warning signs:
• Outlets or switch plates that feel warm to the touch
• Discoloration or scorch marks
• Buzzing or crackling sounds
• Loose or wobbly connections
• Outlets that don’t hold plugs firmly
□ Check All Power Cords
Replace any cords with frayed wires, cracked insulation, or damaged plugs. Never use electrical tape to repair damaged cords—this is a fire hazard.
□ Clean Behind Major Appliances
Vacuum dust from refrigerator coils and ensure appliances have proper airflow. Check that major appliances are plugged directly into outlets, not extension cords.
□ Review Your Electrical Panel
Make sure your panel is easily accessible and all breakers are properly labeled. If you have frequent breaker trips, contact a licensed electrician.
Outdoor Electrical Safety
□ Inspect Outdoor Outlets & Lighting
Check for:
• Cracked or damaged outlet covers
• Water damage or corrosion
• Burnt-out bulbs in outdoor fixtures
• Exposed wiring or loose connections
□ Test Outdoor GFCI Protection
All outdoor outlets should have GFCI protection. Test them the same way as indoor GFCIs.
□ Check Lawn & Garden Equipment
Before using power tools, lawn mowers, and other outdoor equipment:
• Inspect cords for cuts, cracks, or exposed wires
• Check plugs for damage or burn marks
• Ensure all safety guards are in place
• Only use outdoor-rated extension cords outside
□ Trim Trees & Vegetation
Keep tree branches at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines. Contact your utility company for trees near high-voltage lines—never trim these yourself.
□ Inspect Exterior Lighting Systems
If you have permanent outdoor lighting or landscape lighting, check for loose connections, damaged wires, or malfunctioning fixtures.
When to Call a Professional Electrician

• Flickering or dimming lights
• Burning smells near outlets or appliances
• Sparks when plugging in devices
• Any outlets or switches that feel warm
• GFCI outlets that won’t reset
Spring Electrical Safety Tips
DON’T:
• Run extension cords under carpets, rugs, or furniture
• Use indoor extension cords outside
• Overload outlets with multiple devices
• Ignore warning signs like burning smells or sparks
DO:
• Unplug small appliances when not in use
• Use surge protectors for valuable electronics
• Keep electrical devices away from water
• Schedule an electrical safety inspection every 3-5 years
