Small-town business is a funny thing. We work in the same neighbourhoods, shop at the same stores, know many of the same people, and often serve the same customers.
And lately, something has been on my mind.
There is room for more than one good business in a small town.
Someone else doing well does not take anything away from what you have built. Someone having a different approach, style, price point, or way of doing things doesn’t automatically make their work wrong.
I’ve heard more and more conversations lately involving small businesses criticizing the work of one another, and it’s something I personally never want to participate in.
At Northern Edge Landscapes, I would much rather tell you what we can do than tell you what someone else supposedly can’t.
If a client asks my opinion about work that has already been done, I’ll offer constructive, professional advice where I can — but tearing down another local business to make mine look better simply isn’t how I want to operate.
Small businesses are built by real people. People with families, bills, employees, reputations, and a whole lot invested in making their little corner of the world successful.
There is enough room in our community for all of us to succeed.
Do good work. Treat people well. Stand behind what you do.
