Hey everyone! I've been locked out of my Instagram account for a month and a half, still trying to figure out how to get back in. But I'm looking forward to the warmer (and sunnier) weather! Planning our garden and starting seeds in the meantime. šŸ„•

If you want to get a hold of me and ask plant questions, send me an email at [email protected] or a Facebook message!

A natural phenomenon.

Trees helping each other reach the sunshine. A little piggy back.

The forest is a cool place to be. Instead of powering through to get to your destination, take a moment to witness these natural phenomenons.

Hiii it’s been a minute šŸ˜…

I’m here.

Rising Sun is taking a new turn and becoming what I’ve always dreamed of. I’m releasing the fear of what if and shoulds and JUST GOING FOR IT.

Now Rising Sun Horticulture. Still me. Still madly in love with botany. A little less maintenance and a whole lot more teaching. Because us Sea to Sky folks love learning new skills and putting ourselves to the test.

So let’s cultivate knowledge from the ground up.

Rising Sun Horticulture - you may not find me on active on Instagram but I’m around… Applying my knowledge, working with clients, and writing educational blog posts. And of course telling friends random plant facts while walking through the forest (me pictured here with half of my body in the swamp). It’s where I’m happiest.

A new blog post is up on my website! I’m really digging writing right now so if you want to learn some new information - head to my bio to check it out.

What is Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?

It’s essentially a well-thought out approach to controlling pests and disease. It’s a process in which you collect and analyze information to make an informed decision about control methods.

Did you know there are several species of thrips, mites, and aphids? It is super easy to misidentify a pest. (Aphids pictured here)

Now, let’s bring some caution into the situation before controlling pests. Are you practicing preventative care such as dusting leaves, inspecting for pests on a weekly basis, and cleaning up debris in your garden?

Read more about the four steps of an Integrated Pest Management Program in the blog post on my website! 🌿

Do you ever look at a plant and think ā€œwhat the f, that has to be fakeā€ 🤯

That was me when I first laid my eyes on this Boston Tiger Fern (Nephrolepsis exaltata 'Tiger Fern').

This one is protected by a patent so be wary of online sellers. Ensure they are getting their plants from a trusted greenhouse/supplier. Responsible decisions lie deep within the plant world and me. I’ll share more when the time is right šŸ˜‰

Drainage matters, baby! Have you ever seen someone so happy about a MASSIVE bag of perlite? 🤣

I always add a nice scoop of perlite into my soil mixes. It essentially adds air pockets for the roots. Without air, roots can’t survive. Soil is super cool and all until it becomes anaerobic.

What do you use for increasing drainage in your soil? 😁

A little install for 🌱 a few plants go a long way.

The best addition is the skull planter placed beside the flying pigs, hands down.

Are you keeping track of your garden this year? The good, the bad, the ugly, the success…

I recommend keeping a notebook and write down what you planted where, what loved their location, and what you’d do differently.

It will make this next gardening season so much more efficient. It’s all about learning!

If you’d like help preparing a garden journal, please reach out to book a consultation! I love teaching you how to effortlessly grow plants.

I’m focusing on consulting - seeing my clients face light up when they’ve grown the best garden they’ve ever had or finally getting the hang of their indoor plants, that’s the best.

I provide the education needed for you to succeed.

Growing plants from seed is super rewarding… but do you know what’s even better? Having a successful garden.

Buying your plant starts from a garden centre or starting from seed, it’s all the same.

I like the process of growing a single plant from seed because it’s wild to watch its entire life cycle… 🤩

If you’re struggling with growing something from seed, you aren’t a ā€œbadā€ gardener.

You get to choose what works for you.

If growing a plant from seed brings you joy and success, do it. If buying starts from a nursery does it for you, soak it all in and feel accomplished.

If you want to start growing from seed - begin with herbs like this sage then progress to vegetables, flowers, and fruit. Build up that confidence!

I love experimenting in the garden, it’s where I learn best. šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

Some projects are a complete flop and I adore the failures as much as the successes.

I am trying to save seeds this year. Just to see what happens. If it’s a flop, that’s cool too. 🤣

Be chill in the garden. You’ll thank me later. Slug ate your beet leaves? Well at least slugs are still around on this Earth. I welcome any and all creatures…

Enjoy the failures.

I was working HARD to get this entire Monstera adansonii in the frame ā€œeeeeeeee ugh eeee almostā€ šŸ˜…

I’m absolutely in love with this plant - super fun to care for. Swipe to see the plant from March 2021.

What I’ve been doing for care:

• water when more than 50% of the soil is dry or stick your finger in the soil to test soil moisture (I’ve been working with plants long enough that I can tell if something needs water by lifting the plant up or looking at it - most plants show when they need water)

• bright to medium indirect light. I have mine about 3ft from an east facing window.

• fertilize every 3 weeks with an organic fertilizer, a NPK ratio of 3-2-4.

• transplanted into a 6ā€ pot from a 4ā€ pot with living soil. I noticed the roots starting to come out of the bottom of the pot.

• no signs of pests or disease yet

If you really want to master the technique of growing healthy plants, experiment. Try something new, doesn’t work? Cool, try something new. That’s the best part of growing plants - one way isn’t the right way.
