Working vacation in the Okanagan.

I’ve spent the last week and a half in the south Okanagan visiting family and friends, celebrating my dad’s and sister’s birthdays as well as working on a few projects here as well. Primarily irrigation alterations, a new irrigation installation, lawn renovation and some mid summer pruning.

In the pictures you will note some very lush garden beds which now have a completely new drip irrigation system (working around the established plants) and new lawn irrigation installation front, a very nicely set up deck with extensive container plants now accommodated with separate drip irrigation and you will note seed germinating (in one weeks time) in a lawn renovation with irrigation upgrades.

Lots of wildfire smoke, evacuations and although my flight home today is now cancelled due to the smoke, it has lifted considerably today.

Heading home to Squamish tomorrow courtesy of my niece and her husband, good to have family 😊

Another front yard renovation underway.

Eliminating lawn that that serves no purpose. With water restrictions and summer droughts, many lawns struggle to survive providing ample opportunity for w**d infestation.

Converted to a colourful drought tolerant planting bed with an efficient drip irrigation system.

The planting bed will have arborist chip mulch installed and the graded area in front of the bed will be seeded with white clover that will be drought tolerant and require little maintenance.

Benefits of using organic mulch

Organic mulches provide many benefits for your planting bed areas.

Inhibits w**ds

The use of an appropriate depth is organic mulch will block out sunlight from w**d seeds on the soil surface preventing them from germinating. Seeds require sunlight and moisture to germinate.

While seeds on the surface of the mulch may germinate, they will be much easier to pull or hoe before the roots can reach the soil.

While composted mulch will provide a better opportunity for germinating seeds to grow, the use of non composted mulch will deprive the seedlings of nitrogen until the roots can reach the soil. Organic mulches use nitrogen to decompose making it less available to seedlings.

Retains and distributes moisture

Organic mulches are excellent at retaining moisture. Not only does it retain moisture but it also aids in even distribution by wicking the moisture from wetter areas to drier ones. This will make your planting areas much more drought tolerant and reduce the need for frequent irrigation.

Creates habitat for microorganisms

Microorganisms feed on organic matter typically found on the surface of the soil. They then return to the soil and enrich it with composed organic matter and nutrients. The movement of the microorganisms creates tunnels that increase the gas/water exchange of the soil necessary for plant health. This also improves the percolation rates of the soils allowing it to absorb more water in less time much like a sponge therefore preventing excess runoff during heavy rainfall. The greater the food source for these microorganisms, the greater the population will become if not devastated by the use of excessive chemical fertilizer and/or pesticides.

Enriches the underlying soils

With the decomposition of organic mulches nutrients are released back into the soil aided by microorganisms.

Insulates

Organic mulches insulate the soil and plant roots helping to regulate the soil temperature making it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Resists erosion

Mulches help prevent soil erosion and runoff with their fibrous nature slowing down the velocity of surface water. Slower water will not pick up and transport soil particles as readily and allows time for more water to percolate into the soil below thereby reducing the overall volume.

Renewable

As organic mulches breakdown and some is worked into the upper layer of soil by w**ding, planting, hoeing and cultivation, the much layer will become depleted over time. This can easily be corrected with another application of a layer of mulch.

Summer Planting - Best Practices

When doing plantings, it’s best to layout all your plants where you want them so that you can adjust spacing and placement before you start.

Remove one plant at a time and dig the hole 2x the with and 1 1/2x the depth of the root ball. Place the plant with the pot still on immediately into the hole you’ve just dug to avoid getting them mixed up while planting.

If soils are dry and/or during warmer months the new plants will be more prone to drought.

Once you’ve dug the holes for a section with the plants placed in each hole with the pot still on, fill each hole with water and allow to percolate completely before continuing with further planting steps. This ensures that both the rootball and surrounding soils are sufficiently moist prior to planting. Using this technique will allow your plants to survive a week long drought without irrigation. It also allows supplemental watering to more easily be absorbed by the soils rather than just run off. Dry soils are hydrophobic and will repel water. You can go on and dig more holes in another section in the meantime.

Amend soil especially when planting container grown nursery stock and the excavated soils are devoid of substantial organic matter usually lighter in colour. Add peat moss, soil amender or compost to each pile of excavated soil. Plants grown in containers have an ideal growing medium which is rich in organics. A drastic change in growing mediums will act as an artificial barrier for the roots. Bone meal can also be added to aid in root development. Mix amendments into the excavated soil.

Once water has fully dissipated, carefully remove the plant from the pot. Root bound plants can be very difficult to remove and can even require having the pot cut off of them while plants without sufficient root structure, the root ball can tend to break apart while extracting from the pot. The best method is to invert the plant with one hand holding the pot and the other holding the top of the root ball grasping around the base of the plant and give a slight vertical shake. If the plant isn’t root bound, it should slide out after just a few attempts.

Once extracted, score (using a knife cut into the root ball about an eighth to a quarter inch at 6 to 8 intervals) or tease (lightly pull apart exposed roots) especially at the bottom of the root ball. This encourages the roots to venture out and preventing future root bound to occur.

Finally on to planting, add some soil to the bottom of the hole so that the top of the root ball is flush with the surrounding soil grade. The most common mistake made when planting is planting too deep. Soil against the stems or trunk of a shrub or tree will eventually rot out the bark and cambium layer.

Turn the plant so that it is best facing the area from which it will be viewed.

Continue to backfill the remainder of the hole 1/3 from the top ensuring that the soil has been sufficiently mixed with amendments and lightly compressing the soil as you go to ensure no voids are present. The soil should be firm but workable.

Top up the last third with water once again and let dissipate before finishing the backfilling.

Once you finish backfilling the hole using the same technique as mentioned above, ensure the top of the root ball is exposed and flush with the surrounding soils. If mulching the planting bed, taper the mulch to nothing at the base of each plant or tree. Again, mulch or soil against the stems or trunk can kill a plant over time.

Horsetail Control

DYI Spray mixture, effective control of horsetail and other w**ds.

All purpose w**d spray (non selective)

1 gallon vinegar
2 cups Epson salts
1/4 cup dish detergent

How the mixture works according to my research.

Vinegar kills the top growth.

Salt (I use Epson salt as it doesn’t build up in the and sterilize it like table salt) decimates the roots

Dish detergent acts as a surfactant. It aids the mixture to adhere to the plant’s foliage as well as possibly aiding in providing a uniform mixture of vinegar and salt.

4 types of vinegar are available

Regular household vinegar 5%
Pickling vinegar 7%
Cleaning vinegar 10%
Horticultural 20%

Stronger vinegar does necessarily provide better results. While a stronger vinegar may be more effective and quicker to kill top growth, killing it too fast can prevent the salts from reaching the roots.

The vinegar will temporarily slightly acidify the soil.

Many online recipes will call for table salt which I personally do not use as table salt will buildup in the soil and eventually sterilize it. Epson salt does not build up the same way and in fact provides nutrients and trace minerals beneficial to other plants.

I use my mixture most specifically to tackle horsetail and is more effective than anything else I’ve ever used.

After repeated monitoring, I’ve found that horsetail that I’ve pulled previously with send up 3” of new growth in a week’s time. With the spray mixture, it is typically 3 weeks before seeing any new green emerge in the same place.

The mixture that I personally use:

2.5 litres of cleaning vinegar 10%
I dissolve the 2 cups of Epson salts in 1 1/2 litres of water (the Epson salt seems to dissolve better in the water than directly into the vinegar)
1/4 cup of dawn dish detergent

When spraying near other plants I don’t want affected, I use a sheet of cardboard or a cone to protect nearby plants from overspray.
