Team Bee for the win! I had two votes each for bees and butterflies - I loved the idea of butterflies but realized the scale was wrong for a buttercup. Honorable mention to dragonfly, hummingbird, ladybug, chicken (?) and horseshoe crab (thanks, Mr Brushworks, for that last idea 😐). Bonus tiny (3 inch and 1.5 inch) butterflies for you, Team Butterfly 💞

This one just couldn't keep me engaged; I'm realizing I need something in the scene with a beating heart to stay interested. Regardless, I finished today and thought I would share the progress shots as well, as I find them super interesting when other painters share 🙂

After completing an M.Sc from Dalhousie, I worked all over North America in the biological sciences. I moved back to NS in 2022. Fast forward to January of 2025, I was in the prairies for a work trip and organized a paint night for my colleagues. It triggered something in me, and that winter I bought some supplies and began learning. I did a few tutorials online to establish some basics but quickly found it far less frustrating just to do my own thing. Despite my day job, this painting venture escalated quickly. In April, our lovely friends at the Baked Beaver Bakery started displaying and selling my work which gave me a huge confidence boost - then I had a table at Flourish After Dark in May, sold quite a few things and was entirely hooked. I will be selling at my first New Glasgow Farmer's Market on July 18, and thrilled to be participating in the upcoming Camera and Canvas exhibit. I think back to two years ago and it seems unthinkable I wasn't painting. It would be like losing a limb now, to stop.

These soft, small stories are so rewarding to imagine and then paint. At just 5 by 7 inches, this little ladybug will be for sale at my first ever appearance at the New Glasgow Farmers Market this Saturday.

I donated a pet portrait commission in a fundraiser for the recent Provost St fire victims, and this is the result. Will attach the reference photo I worked from. I've never met this sweet old boy, but I just know he is a Very Good Dog.
