The homes that flood every summer almost never have a dramatic burst.
It's the slow leak that runs for two weeks behind a locked door, with nobody home to catch it. You'd be amazed at how much damage a tiny drip can do when it's got two weeks and an empty house to work with.
So before you head out, give yourself ten minutes. It'll save your floors, cabinets, and drywall:
β Close the main water shut-off valve
β Set the water heater to vacation mode
β Check your outdoor taps for drips
β Make sure that the valve actually closes
And do yourself a favour, go find that main valve now while everything's dry and calm. You really don't want to be hunting for it while you're standing in a puddle.

TL;DR: Before you head out for a trip, shut off your main water supply. Can't do that? At least close the lines to your washer, dishwasher, and toilets. A
