Have you heard? The Maple Avenue bridge next to our Sussex office is closed for repairs!

Coming to see us? For those pulling off the Highway at Exit 195 and following Marble St. into town - after your visit with the larger than life cows, Daisy and Buttercup, of course - you will not be able to reach us through the east end of Maple Avenue.

The detour will take you across the tracks, where you can turn right onto Perry Street, a quick left onto Eveleigh Street, right onto Leonard Drive, and right again onto Main Street.

Once you're done eating and shopping in beautiful downtown Sussex you can cross the tracks again and take another right onto the west end of Maple!

When our field crews were out in the woods Friday, they were in for a big surprise! Having been on site Wednesday, but not Thursday, they were quite surprised to come across these prints in the fresh snow.

A healthy reminder that our black bear friends are out and about, and probably a little peckish after their winter nap.

The date and location of the teddy bear picnic was not confirmed, as we don't go in the woods in disguise to survey.

Charles has been articling with us since 2020, a process involving Statute and Survey Law tests, technical experience requirements, and completion of a techinical project. He brings a unique perspective to our team and the profession.

We're closing out the year with some team building and holiday events at DMSE!

We started Nov. 22 with a trip to Water Street Dinner Theater. We followed that up on Nov. 29 at our Saint John office with our annual luncheon and trip to Breakout Saint John. During lunch Stephen Saunders, Retired NBLS and unofficial office historian, pulled some files out of our archives and showed us what Saint John looked like as early as the late 1700's.

With a rapidly growing team and two office locations, we appreciate these opportunities to foster discussion and connection in our organization.

Finding old boundary evidence and retracing the footsteps of previous surveyors is often challenging, but sometimes very rewarding. A chat with a landowner after finding two parallel boundary lines led us to obtaining a Return of Survey prepared by the late Robert Fulton, NBLS 234, completed November 6, 1969 for the Department of Lands & Mines.

Using that plan, our crews went out yesterday, exactly 55 years later, and were able to find two witness trees and ultimately the corner post buried in the moss, as well as another property corner next to a maple stump.

How do we know they were the same witness trees? Mr. Fulton scribed the angle and distance from the corner into the tree, and those marks are still legible.

For those wondering, our measurements between pipes was 10cm different over 27 chains 48 links, and our witnesses were well within the width of a spruce tree.
