A new Thanksgiving tradition.

Some people do turkey and football. This year we tried the races instead, and I think it's sticking.

Walked the barns, met a few of the athletes, then stood at the paddock rail studying the program like I know what I'm doing.

I don't. Went 2 for 6 picking winners, so I won't be quitting construction just yet.

But I've made up my mind about one thing: next year, I'm going to own a racehorse. Maybe not the whole horse. Might be a leg, might be an ear. But some part of one of these is going to be mine.

And I've already got an inside connection. Peyton Bear's uncle is a horse trainer, so my leg of the horse will be in good hands.

Good horses, good company, and plenty to be thankful for. Same time next year, hopefully cheering for my share of the field.

Not a bad Friday.

Basement job is officially wrapped. Finished, cleaned up, and handed back to the homeowner today. That one feels good.

Met Castle Engineering on site in downtown Gull Lake and walked a couple of different sites while we were at it. Plans are coming together. More on that soon.

Even found time to get the bike out for a ride. In Saskatchewan in October, you take those when you can get them.

Best part is still coming: my baby girl and her boyfriend are headed down for the long weekend. Can't wait till they get here.

Day 4 in Gull Lake.

The Youngberg Block has a wall where the old storefront used to be. Yes, it looks like we boarded it up and went home. Don't worry, it's getting a window. Last photo is where this one's headed.

Across town at the basement job, the sump is in and plumbed, and the wall crack is repaired. Tomorrow we delete a window and concrete that sump in. After that, the water has somewhere to go that isn't the basement floor.

One building gaining a window. One losing one. It all evens out.

Dropped the excavator off at Rocky Rentals today. Last time this year. Hopefully.

Digging season is done, and nobody on the crew is sad about it.

Blueskin is on, drainage pipe is in, and we backfill tomorrow. This house goes into winter with the water staying on the outside of the foundation, where it belongs.

Good year in the dirt. Happy to be out of it.

Day two in Gull Lake. Same two jobs, a lot less in the way.

I took the first picture this morning. Kyle took the second one at quitting time. Same storefront, about eight hours apart. The old front is off, and now we can see what that building has been holding onto all these years.

Over at the basement job, the trench is done. Blueskin's next, and then we bury all of it. Some of our best work is work nobody will ever see. If we do it right, the homeowner never thinks about it again.

For anyone keeping score from yesterday: the gas line is right where we found it. Calling first still works.

Back in Gull Lake with two jobs on the go.

First one is the front of one of the old brick buildings downtown. We're handling the framing and structural work so the storefront has something solid behind it. Brick and doors belong to other trades. Our part is making sure the building is ready for them, and for whatever comes next.

Second one is the start of our next basement repair. Same goal as every one of these: a foundation the homeowner can quit worrying about.

And yes, that's a yellow flag in the grass. I always call before I dig. Finding a gas line with an excavator is a hard way to meet the neighbours.

Good to be working in the town I grew up in.
