It’s not too early to start thinking about winter operations. ❄️
De-icing and anti-icing planning is already on the radar for many operations teams — and that’s good. But the bigger question is: can we move the needle and start shifting away from chloride-based de-icers?
The answer is yes.
Recent research is making the long-term costs of road salts impossible to ignore in Canada. Freshwater systems are experiencing progressive salinization (hypersalinization in some cases).
A major UBC-led study has shown that environmentally realistic road-salt pulses in streams — sometimes exceeding B.C.’s acute chloride guideline by up to 11-fold — are lethal to developing Pacific salmon. Freshly fertilized eggs are especially vulnerable; high mortality and developmental impacts occur at concentrations already measured in urban streams during the spawning window.
Road salts containing inorganic chlorides (including CaCl₂) were assessed under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 and found to meet the criteria for toxicity. They were not added to Schedule 1. Instead, Canada has relied on a voluntary Code of Practice centred on “responsible road salt management plans.”
The reality on the ground shows we continue to apply far too much salt, and the cumulative impacts are now well documented.
Canada deploys on the order of 5–7 million tonnes of road salt annually — roughly 125–175 kg per person every winter, depending on the year and what is counted.
That volume doesn’t stay on the road.
In Calgary, the catastrophic Bearspaw south feeder main failure was linked in the official investigation to elevated chloride levels in the surrounding soil. Those chlorides are highly likely to have come from decades of road salt and brine application, accelerating corrosion of the prestressed concrete pipe through microcracking, stress corrosion cracking, and hydrogen embrittlement.
In many sensitive ecological areas and around critical infrastructure, chlorides are already de facto restricted or avoided. So why isn’t there a broader policy shift toward doing less harm?
Non-chloride liquid de-icers and anti-icers exist and are already performing in the field. They offer a practical pathway to reduce — and in many cases eliminate — reliance on chlorides without sacrificing safety or level of service.
The science is clear.
The infrastructure failures are real.
The alternatives are available.
It’s time to stop treating “responsible management” of an inherently damaging material as the end goal and start prioritizing products that simply do less harm.
