🌲 Now Hiring: Forest Resource Inventory Field Technician (Seasonal) 🌲

Trade your desk for endless forest trails, your commute for atv ride, and your office for the heart of the boreal forest. Northwinds Environmental Services is looking for adventurous, hard-working individuals ready to spend their summer living and working in remote northern forests.

This isn’t your average summer job. You’ll be based out of the Thunder Bay region and heading deep into the Wabadowgang Noopming Forest—measuring trees, mapping landscapes, digging soil pits, and building real-world environmental skills that matter.

💼 What you’ll do:
• Work hands-on in the boreal forest collecting vegetation and soil data
• Use GPS, tablets, and forest maturation equipment to inventory the forest
• Spend extended periods outdoors with a small, tight-knit crew
• Experience true remote field life (yes, that means unplugging)

🌄 Who this is for:
• Outdoor enthusiasts who’d rather be in hiking boots than behind a screen
• College or university students, recent grads, or experience in related fields
• People who don’t mind long days, changing weather, and getting their hands dirty
• Anyone chasing adventure, independence, and meaningful work

🔥 Why you’ll love it:
• Live and work in one of the world’s largest forest ecosystems
• Build skills employers actually look for
• Make lifelong connections (and stories you’ll tell forever)
• Potential for contract extension beyond summer

If your idea of a perfect day includes fresh air, physical work, and exploring places few people ever see—this is your shot.

Northwinds staff have been busy in the Wabadowgang Nooping Forest developing post-harvest effects monitoring and researching practical solutions for herbicide-free forest management. 🌲

By assessing silviculture methods and real-time renewal responses following harvest activities, our crews are helping build a clearer understanding of how these landscapes respond to harvesting. This work also contributes to the development of a toolkit of herbicide alternatives, identifying effective approaches that support forest regeneration while eliminating chemical treatments.

Through field monitoring, ministry collaboration, and applied research, we’re helping develop tools that support healthier forests and informed management decisions. Stay tuned!

Winter is one of the most important times of year to understand caribou habitat use. ❄️🦌

Winter caribou habitat surveying focuses on how herds select and move through mature conifer forests, peatlands, and windswept uplands when snow depth, forage availability, and predator dynamics shape daily survival. During this season, caribou rely heavily on terrestrial and arboreal lichens, often cratering through snow to access critical food sources. Documenting feeding sites, track networks, bedding areas, and herd population provides valuable insight into winter range quality and use.

Winter surveys also help identify key refuge areas—intact forest patches and low-disturbance landscapes that support energy conservation during the most demanding months of the year. Understanding these patterns is essential for responsible post-effects monitoring.

Hooves on the move! 🦌🐐

Our ungulate surveys are in full swing—tracking hoofed wildlife to better understand populations, and what habitats they rely on most. These surveys provide critical data that guide land-use decisions, resource management, and reducing impacts on wildlife.

Every sighting counts. By monitoring ungulates on the ground and from the air, we’re helping ensure healthy herds and resilient ecosystems for generations to come. 🌲📊
