It’s Not Just You: Navigating the Ontario Winter Blues ❄️🕯️
Let’s be real for a second—January & February in rural Ontario can feel pretty heavy. The sun sets before 5:00 PM, the wind is howling across the fields, and the excitement of the holidays has faded.
If you’re feeling more tired than usual, or just can’t seem to find your "spark," I want you to know it’s not just you. About 15% of us Canadians deal with the "winter blues," and for many, it can go even deeper into Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
In our house, we’ve learned that when the world outside goes dormant, we have to be extra intentional about finding light inside. Here is how I’m "tending my internal garden" this month:
🌱 Growing: I started planning & prepping for the first of the seeds to be started.
🥖 Baking Therapy: When I’m feeling restless, I head to the kitchen. The rhythmic act of kneading dough and the warmth of the oven is my favorite way to ground myself. Plus, the house smells like a hug.
🚶‍♀️ The Noon-Hour Walk: I try to get outside right at midday when the light is strongest. Even 15 minutes of Ontario sun (even if it’s through clouds!) helps regulate my mood and sleep.
🥫 Savoring the Harvest: Eating the food we canned last summer isn't just about nutrition; it's a reminder of my own resilience and hard work.
My gentle reminder to you today: It’s okay to slow down. Just like the garden, we aren't meant to bloom all year round. Winter is a time for rest and roots.
How are you taking care of your heart this week? Are you reading, baking, or maybe just taking extra naps? Let’s support each other in the comments.
