Ever want to just take a packet of seeds, scatter them around the garden, water, and watch them grow? 🌱

Here’s 8 easy-to-grow seeds that you can surface sow directly in the garden!

🌼 1. Poppies
🌼 2. Celosia
🌼 3. Amaranth
🌼 4. Nigella
🌼 5. Marigold
🌼 6. Yarrow
🌼 7. Pearl Everlasting
🌼 8. Columbine

A few tips for success:
🌱 don’t sow the seeds right before a big rainfall, otherwise your seeds will wash away!
🌱 mixing the seeds with sand before you sow them helps you see where you’ve sown them and scatters them more evenly
🌱 keep the soil moist after you’ve sown the seeds to help with germination and growth

Have you tried to surface sow seeds? If so, tell me what you grew in the comments!

🌷 this week! 🌷

April 3-9
1. Crocus
2. Scilla
3. Winter Aconite
4. Netted Iris
5. Striped Squill
6. Snowdrops

This week, it felt like the early spring flowers finally exploded! Most notably, colourful crocuses were finally blooming and blue scillas were just starting to open.

I got so much pleasure seeing the beautiful native ground cover, winter aconite, in bloom as well with its yellow flowers.

The daffodils are just starting to bud up, and shoots of tulips and hyacinth leaves are emerging from the ground. The magnolia buds are plumping up. Spring is definitely in the air!

What else have you spotted in bloom in the GTA this past week?

March 27 - April 2

🌷Crocus

This past week was all about the snowdrops and p***y willows, with a few early crocuses in the mix!

While there are lots of daffodil and tulips leaves pushing through the ground, we’re still a ways away from blooms.

Buds are forming on trees and more crocuses flowers are just a few days away from being in full bloom!

What did you see in bloom this week? Let me know in the comments!

🌸This week’s 🌸

SNOWDROPS

Something that many gardeners aspire to is an ever-blooming perennial garden throughout the entire growing season.

When I first starting gardening, I dreaded those gaps when nothing was blooming and there was so much anticipation when something was about to flower. Ideally, I could have ebbs and flows of flowers throughout the season.

That’s why I’m starting a new weekly tradition where I will document perennials in bloom every week in the Greater Toronto Area using ! 🎉

By the end of the season, we should have an inventory of perennials and when they bloomed to help us plan our perennial gardens moving forward.

Feel free to document your perennials blooms and use if you live in and around Toronto as well!

Together we can create an ultimate perennial bloom guide! 🙌🌷🌸🌺🌻🌼

This week, it was all about the snowdrops. These little white flowers work great in lawns and garden beds, and are such a hopeful sign of the spring season. Plant these in the fall for spring blooms the following year!

Forget waiting until your last frost date. Here’s 6 flowers seeds that can be planted directly in your garden as soon as the soil can be worked! 🌱🌷

These flowers are very easy to plant and grow, can handle some light frost and cooler temperatures.

Plant these for early summer blooms!

Tips for success:
🌼 avoid planting right before hard rain to avoid having your seeds washed away
🌼 water soil after sowing and water soil daily (unless it rains)
🌼 sow successions of seeds every week to extend the blooming period of the flower and avoid everything blooming at once
🌼 thin seedlings as per seed packet instructions once they have sprouted to avoid over crowding

🤔 Gardening terms got you confused? Let’s change that!

Here’s a summary of differences between annuals, perennials, and biennials. These terms describe the type of lifecycle a plant has.

I love to work all 3 kinds of plants into my garden for more variety. Each have their own advances and disadvantages, but are equally exciting to grow!
