PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: Mirvish Laneway House
The old garage was falling down. What replaced it is a home built for retirement.
Samantha and Colinâs family had owned this Annex property for decades. When the garage out back started to go, the easy move would have been a simple rental suite. They wanted something more: a separate, light-filled, luxurious home they might one day retire into.
Working with architect Neil Morfitt, we built a two-bedroom laneway house designed to last for generations. The best move in the design was putting the kitchen and living room upstairs, to capture the daylight and the views over the new park in Mirvish Village.
It wasnât without its challenges. A long campaign with Toronto Hydro got the property upgraded to 400-amp service, with the cables buried in concrete. It was a good reminder that servicing belongs in the plan from day one.
