The powder room is the one space in the house where a bold pattern is an easy decision. Nobody spends an hour in there, which means a wall you would hesitate to live with across a whole bedroom becomes exactly right in a room you pass through.

Wallpaper is also where prep work shows. Walls skim-coated flat, seams planned so the pattern lands properly in the corners and around the mirror, and the paper carried behind the vanity rather than stopped at it. Patterns are honest about substrate, which is a good reason to be thorough before the first drop goes up.

A powder room is a small scope with a large return. It is often the room guests use, and it is one of the few places where a design decision can be purely about delight.

If you have one that could use a point of view, let’s talk about it.

Built-ins are where storage turns into architecture. This wall holds deep drawers and closed cabinets below, open shelving above, and a continuous white oak surface tying the two together so the whole run feels like one piece rather than furniture pushed against a wall.

The details are what make it sit right. Vertical grain carried across the doors and drawer fronts, a grasscloth back panel behind the shelves to give the display depth, slim adjustable shelves so the proportions stay light, and a matching oak panel beside it so the art has a surface of its own.

Custom millwork lets a room use its full height and its awkward dimensions, which is worth a lot in a Toronto house. Everything you want out of sight goes below, everything you want to look at goes above.

If you have a wall that could be working harder, let’s draw something for it.

What would it take to future-proof your home?

The answer starts at the roofline and works its way down to below grade. Some upgrades are about materials designed to take a hit, others are about moving more water, faster and farther from your walls. And one of them comes down to a single measurement you can check yourself in the attic.

When a repair is already on the calendar, it's often the right moment to build in a little more resilience.

We walk through five upgrades worth planning for on our blog at craftsmanreno.com/blog.

Do you know which fall chore might keep your basement dry?

It isn't inside the house, and it doesn't take special tools. It's a few steps from your back door, and in a lot of east Toronto homes, from Riverdale to The Beaches, it's easy to forget it's there at all. During a short, heavy downpour, it decides where the water goes.

A pair of gloves and a few minutes this fall is all it takes.

Find out which chore we mean, plus the rest of our storm-ready checklist, on our blog at craftsmanreno.com/blog.

What if a simple walk around your house could save you costly repairs?

Fall is a good time to step outside with a coffee and take a slow lap of your home. Many of the things that protect a house from heavy rain sit right at eye level or below: places where water collects, the paths it takes away from your foundation, and a few spots that quietly fill up with leaves this time of year.

Thirty minutes is enough to check them all. Knowing where to look is the part that makes the difference.

We put together the full walkaround, along with what to do once the weather turns, in our updated fall maintenance guide. Read it on our blog at craftsmanreno.com/blog

The selections phase is one of the most enjoyable parts of a bathroom project. A bathroom is small enough that you can be decisive with materials, and every surface sits close enough to the eye that texture does real work.

Look at what is happening on this wall. The tile is a narrow glazed format with visible variation, laid in a stack bond so the light catches unevenly down the run and the whole plane shifts through the day. Against it, rift-cut oak on the vanity with the grain running vertical, a stone top with soft movement, a terrazzo floor with large aggregate, and matte black hardware to hold the edges. Five textures in a very small room, and they get along because each one was chosen knowing what it would sit beside.

That is the part we love about design meetings. Samples on the table, tile held up next to the wood in the actual daylight of the room, the moment a client picks two things up together and says yes, that is it. Wall-hung fixtures and a concealed carrier were worked out in the same conversations, which is how the floor stays open and the tile runs uninterrupted behind.

If you have a bathroom on your list for the winter, let’s get the samples out.

A renovation means a crew in your house for weeks at a time. They are there when you leave for work and often still there when you get back, so who those people are matters as much as what they build.

Respect for your home shows up in ordinary ways. Floor protection down before the first tool comes in. Dust walls built properly rather than taped up as an afterthought. The site swept at the end of the day so the part of the house you are still living in feels like yours. A quick heads up before the water goes off. Boots off, music at a reasonable volume, the fridge where you left it.

What makes that consistent is not a checklist. It is that the people doing the work genuinely like the work. Our carpenters care how a mitre closes up when nobody is looking. Our tile setters will spend an extra hour on a layout so the cuts land where they should. People who take that kind of pride in their trade tend to carry it into everything else about the day, including how they treat the family living around them.

That is the part clients mention most when they call us for a second project. Not only the finished room, but what the months leading up to it felt like.

A kitchen earns its keep in the small movements. Three steps from fridge to prep counter, a landing spot beside the range for a hot pan, drawers that open without catching the dishwasher door. You make those motions a few hundred times a week, and when the layout is planned around them, the room starts giving time back.

This range wall was laid out that way. Full-height quartz behind the cooktop runs straight into the counters, so the surface you wipe down after dinner is one continuous plane with nothing to catch grease. The hood is built in and clad to match the cabinetry, with a white oak band at the base to keep it from reading as a box on the wall. Counter space sits on both sides of the range, which is the detail people notice most once they are cooking in it.

Flow is the part of kitchen design worth spending time on early. We work through it at the drawing stage with our clients, mapping how the room gets used on a Tuesday night and on the day you host twelve people, before a single cabinet is ordered.

If you are thinking about your kitchen for the coming year, let's start that conversation now.

This whole third floor came apart and went back together as a single suite. Working with our design partner and their fabulous vision for this space, we opened the ceilings up to the rafters, left the collar ties exposed, and set five skylights into the roof plane so daylight reaches every corner of the level.

The shower is where it pays off most. Under a sloped roof, glass overhead is often the only way to bring in real daylight, and here it lands directly over the shower with a view straight up into the tree canopy.

Storage was the other problem worth solving. The suite had almost none before, so we built in walk-in closets and worked the odd angles under the slope into usable space rather than losing them.

Skylights and additions like this are a good fit for fall. The roof is dry, the days are still long enough to work, and detailing the flashing and membrane now means the assembly is sealed and tested well before the first freeze. There is a nice side effect too, which is more daylight indoors through the shortest weeks of the year.

If your top floor is dark or short on storage, let's take a look at what the roof structure allows.‍

A Toronto backyard has more in it than the four months we usually ask of it. Once there's something built out there to walk toward, the yard becomes a place you can use year round.

This cedar sauna is a version of just that. Tight tongue and groove throughout, considered ventilation, layered benches, correct clearances and stove board under the heater, and a stainless chimney that runs straight through the roof.

The same thinking applies to a three season room off the kitchen, a studio at the back of the lot, or a covered porch with heat and proper lighting.

Outdoor structures are a category we build right through the fall, and the timing works in your favour. The ground stays workable into late November, trades have good availability this time of year, and the permit and setback review on a narrow east end lot fits comfortably into the schedule. A build that starts in October is finished and sealed before the cold settles in.
