We’re honoured to share that Horseshoe Bay House has been awarded Gold Certification in the Cottage & Country House category at the INT.design Grand Prix du Design Awards.

Situated on a highly exposed stretch of Lake Huron’s coastline and within a flood plain, this rural retreat was raised on piers to meet Conservation Authority restrictions, part of the broader set of conditions that shaped the design. Two volumes are linked by a bridge-like foyer that shelters a courtyard from the wind off the lake, while the living spaces open out toward the water. It’s a house designed to sit lightly on a shifting landscape, attuned to the experience of retreat living and to the site’s broader ecology — from the changing rhythm of the seasons to the thousands of migratory birds that pass through each year.

As recently featured in the National Post, Horseshoe Bay House was designed so every room feels “welcoming, functional and well-used,” the kind of home that fills easily with family and friends.

Vaulted tongue-and-groove ceilings rise above the main living space, while wide-plank oak floors with radiant heating bring warmth through the colder months. Large openings frame views of Lake Huron, and as the homeowners shared with the publication, “even during the darkest days of winter, there’s natural light.”

Designed with “East Coast and Scandinavian influences,” Horseshoe Bay House features cedar shake cladding that traces back to summers the homeowners spent on Cape Cod when their children were young, its weathered texture paired with the clean, simple lines of the barn-inspired volumes.

Part of the property lies within a floodplain, so the rebuild had to remain within the footprint of the original cottage, raised on piers to rest lightly on the land. One volume holds the public living spaces, and the other, rising two storeys, holds the bedrooms and a sunken music room. The two are joined by a bridge-like foyer that opens onto a sheltered courtyard — “a dreamy little spot,” as the National Post writes — protected from the winds off the bay, the connector letting each side feel separate.

Our Horseshoe Bay House is featured in this weekend’s National Post, and we’re grateful for the story.

Dubbed by the publication as a ‘cottage with wings,’ this rural retreat — featuring two gabled volumes joined by a bridge-like foyer — sits on the shore of Lake Huron near Port Elgin, along a bird habitat where up to 50,000 visitors touch down each migratory season.

This early sketch of Riverdale Red House’s rear addition, drawn during the design phase, is one we kept returning to as the drawings were refined. And throughout that process, what stayed constant wasn’t a single detail, but a way of thinking: a home that embraces the outdoors and grows with the family.

Avid cyclists, the family at this house needed a rear entrance designed around that activity, with the bikes stored in a backyard shed. Each member has a custom locker made of a warm wood that echoes the sapele outside, including a cubby for their helmet and a drawer underneath for hats and mitts. A slatted wood screen separates the space from the adjacent dining room, creating a visual connection while giving each room its own sense of enclosure.
