Steps to Help Prevent Frozen Pipes this winter.

• Know where to find your main water shut-off valve and how it works (in case your pipes burst).
• Insulate pipes most prone to freezing, especially near outside walls and in crawl spaces, the attic and garage. This can be done with foam pipe covers available from building supply or home improvement stores.
• Seal air leaks in your home and garage to stop cold air from getting in. Check around windows and doors, electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes.
• Outdoor faucets are the first to freeze. Unscrew any hoses, turn off the outdoor water supply and let the taps drain.
• If your pipes are prone to freezing, there may be a problem you cannot see. Consider contacting a plumber for advice on how best to protect your home.
• Commercial water customers – protect fire lines by wrapping all lines exposed to the cold.

How to Prevent Kitchen Sink Clogs From Happening

Collect cooking grease and oil in a container and put it out with the trash, or soak it up with a paper towel and throw it on the compost.

Do not run the garbage disposal on hard items such as fruit pits or bones—or on stringy items such as banana peels or celery.
The best way to prevent kitchen clogs from happening is to use enzyme treatment once a month. There are several different types of enzymes and they all seem to work just about the same. Follow the directions and do not use the sink overnight so that the enyzmes can work.

Enzyme treatments are a powdered form of bacteria that likes to eat soap, scum and other gunk that gets in your drain. When you pour the enzyme down the drain, you allow those bacteria to grow down there and feed off all the stuff you don't want to be clogging your drain. The treatment works continuously because the bacteria feed and grow. However, some things we put down the drain can kill them, which is why it is important to add new enzyme each month.

Bleach kills all bacteria and so do many harsh chemicals, including any sort of chemical you put down to unclog the drain.
The important part is to use enzymes regularly, once a week at first when you experienced slow drainage and then every month.
