The Putman Family YWCA project redefines the way people think of Passive House design within the context of providing affordable housing in an urban setting. Our project is a 6-storey plus a basement social housing residence comprising family-sized units and a Community and Enterprise Centre spanning the ground and the basement floor. The development strategy also integrates multiple outdoor amenity spaces to promote a sense of neighbourhood and community building amongst the occupants.

The building is designed to Passive House standards to reflect YWCA’s core values of providing comfortable, healthy, secure, resilient, and safe housing for women. The design of the exterior leverages the quality and the expediency of off-site manufactured precast envelope panels to meet the thermal performance criteria and the design aspirations. YWCA Hamilton aims to achieve energy savings of 75% and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of more than 25% compared to the National Energy Code for Buildings 2015.

The project is on track to receive Passive House certification in Q1 of 2023.

Our project, Meadowbrook Lane Community Housing, is well underway.

Designed to the Passive House Standard this 10-storey residential complex brings much-needed affordable housing to the city of Windsor. The 143,000 square foot building has 145 affordable housing units and shared community spaces on each floor. The building creates a comfortable and healthy environment for all residents with a strong emphasis on creating community through vertical neighbourhoods.

Once completed, this project will be one of the largest Passive House certified complexes in Ontario.

Meet Susana Garzon, an Architectural Designer at KMAI.

Susana joined Kearns Mancini in January 2022. She has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá Colombia and has 5 years of work experience with renowned Colombian architecture firms such as TAB >| arch. Daniel Bonilla and A.I.A. She has been heavily involved in design development and construction documents for large-scale commercial, mixed-use, and residential projects. Susana has interests in BIM and sustainable design and assures to put into practice all her software and technical skills for the benefit of KMAI.

When we asked Susana what she enjoys most about being an Architectural Designer, she replied:

“What I like most about being an Architectural Designer at KMAI is the opportunity to work hand in hand with talented people and to grow professionally in such a diverse and collaborative environment. As architects, we get both the responsibility and privilege to design and create people's dwellings. Modern technology, such as BIM, empowers us to do so with greater quality and efficiency as we build towards a more sustainable future.”

Kearns Mancini Architects is participating in YWCA Hamilton’s Walk a Mile in Their Shoes on September 14th in efforts to raise funds and awareness needed to end gender-based violence.

We are passionate about the work that YWCA Hamilton is doing, and we believe that everyone deserves to feel safe. KMAI has been supporting YWCA Hamilton’s efforts and vision by creating affordable housing, such as The Putman Family YWCA, that provide healthy, safe, and secure places to live for anyone and everyone.

Meet Cedric Druetta - a French-trained Architectural Designer who joined KMAI in 2019. While his 12-year experience spans across cultural, hospitality, commercial and residential sectors, he has a passion for heritage conservation and Art Deco architecture.

Prior to joining KMAI, Cedric managed a branch office of a French architectural firm in Casablanca where he was responsible for the design and construction of 30+ large projects through all phases of work.⁠

When we asked Cedric what he likes most about being an architect, he answered: ⁠
“Each project is a unique adventure that leads to new places and new cultures. I am fortunate to have worked on three different continents and had the chance to collaborate with diverse groups and individuals who have enriched me as a professional - and most importantly as a person. That's why I love being an architect.”⁠
