𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 💗

Great planting isn’t just about what looks beautiful together—it’s about how each element responds to its surroundings.

The most successful combinations consider everything: the architecture, the materials, the textures, the soil, water, drainage and light. It’s a layered conversation between plant and place, horticulture and art.

Case in point: one of our favourite pairings, where linear structure of the IPE deck skirt is softened by a bed of Hydrangea macrophylla 'Wedding Gown', which is then anchored into a cluster of Carex 'Ice Dance'. Layered, simple yet effective for transforming a shady path.

Because when it’s done well, planting doesn’t just complement a space—it’s the finishes that completes the space.

Coming soon to a backyard near you 🌿

I’m often asked what landscape designers and architects do all winter.

While it may appear quiet from the outside, it’s actually one of our most intensive seasons.

Winter is where everything begins.

It’s when we design, plan, and refine—shaping each project from initial concept through to detailed construction drawings, 3D renderings, planting palettes, and material selections. It’s thoughtful, layered work that lays the foundation for everything to come.

And now, spring has arrived. 💛

Our crews are mobilizing, projects are breaking ground, and months of intentional design are beginning to take shape outdoors—transforming from our shared vision into a lived experience.

This is one of the most exciting moments for our clients and for us.

Take a look behind the scenes at the spaces we’ve been quietly creating over the winter, now coming to life.

Stay tuned 🌱

Spring is here. 🌿✨

And while it’s symbolic for many, for me, it’s always been personal.

Earlier in my career, I spent my days in corporate environments where productivity was the priority and time outdoors was intentional. Lunch breaks at a park, quick visits to a garden centre… I didn’t have the language for it then, but I do now.

Nature plays a vital role in how we regulate, think, and feel.

Today, that understanding shapes everything we do at JHDG. We design immersive outdoor living spaces that go beyond beauty; spaces where children explore, adults find reprieve, and families connect in meaningful, everyday ways.

Because nature isn’t a luxury. It’s essential to our well-being.

As the days grow longer and everything begins to bud, it’s worth asking:

How is your outdoor space working for you this season? 🌱

The Sunday garden was designed around a feeling.

Late morning light. Coffee in hand. Barefoot on cool stone.

Where hedge rows create intimacy. The sound of falling water softens the week’s stress. Bold blooms offer fragrance and nostalgia. Hydrangeas gather generously, creating rhythm and cohesion.

It’s immersive without overwhelming. Layered without excess.

A place for personal reprieve and the quiet reminder that luxury is a feeling.

Follow the yellow brick road ✨

We recently spent the most magical day at Bloomland in Oz at the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Yes, it was whimsical, nostalgic, and absolutely breathtaking… but what stayed with me was the feeling.

Immersive environments have the power to shift us.
To slow our breathing.
To spark wonder.
To reconnect us to our imagination, our childhoods, to nature, and to each other.

And if I’m being honest? The orchids completely stole my heart.

Layer upon layer of drama. Each bloom a living work of art. I could have lingered for hours (though the kids had other plans 😉).

If you’re looking for a unique, uplifting adventure, you still have time to visit. This journey through Oz is a beautiful reminder that thoughtful design doesn’t simply decorate a space. It transforms how we experience it.

Huge shout-out to everyone who brought Oz to life—seriously, bravo! 👏

A Sensory Symphony in Green

Imagine stepping into a sanctuary where the gentle rustle of leaves whispers secrets to the breeze, the scent of blooming flowers fills the air, and the soft texture of lawn underfoot grounds you in the present moment. This isn't a dream; it's the reality we've crafted in this stunning backyard redesign.

We've perfected the art of simplicity in outdoor living by harnessing the power of sensory design; creating a space that nurtures the mind, body, and soul. Notice the carefully chosen plants – not just for their beauty, but for their textures, fragrances, and even the subtle sounds they create. We've incorporated a pergola overhead to provide shadow and privacy as needed. A bench in the foreground calling out to you, to take a moment of respite from your busy day.

Let's connect and discuss how we can transform your outdoor space into a personal sanctuary. Send me a message to schedule a consultation.

The long weekend is right around the corner, which means it's time to let your tender annuals and tropicals enjoy the great outdoors! 🌿☀️

Here’s how to create a fabulous front planter display for your entrance:

1. Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers: Begin with a striking tall plant in the centre for drama, add mid-sized blooms for vibrant "fillers," and let trailing plants like ivy or sweet potato vine cascade over the edges for a touch of elegance.

2. Color Coordination: Select a colour scheme that complements your home's exterior. Whether you choose a sleek monochrome or a lively mix, a consistent palette will make your arrangement pop.

3. Seasonal Adaptability: Opt for heat-loving plants that thrive in your area to keep your display healthy and dazzling all summer long.

4. Proper Potting: Ensure your urn provides good drainage and is filled with suitable soil for optimal plant health.

5. Regular Maintenance: Keep your arrangement lush and inviting with regular watering and by trimming any dead leaves or blooms.

Turn your doorstep into a warm, welcoming oasis with these easy and effective tips! 🌸✨

Happy Long Weekend!!! 😎

This is my pick of the week! ⭐️

A perfect planting combination for the east side of your home or a heavily shaded spot; Lamium maculatum and Hakonechloa macra.

When planning your garden or outdoor space, thoughtful plant combinations can make a world of difference! Here are my top 3 tips to maximize your investment with plants:

1. Choose Right plant for the right place
Why? Plants that are adapted to your local climate and soil conditions, require less water and maintenance.

2. Utilize Companion Planting
Why? Certain plants thrive together, enhancing growth and reducing pests naturally.

3. Layer Your Plants
Why? Creating layers with tall, medium, and low plants can optimize space and create visual interest while reducing the need for additional features (like mulch).

Before you start planting, research your local climate and soil conditions to select the best combinations and invest in Native plants where possible. This not only saves you money but also creates a thriving, low-maintenance landscape that you can enjoy for years to come!
