The bedrooms face south toward the view, and the bathrooms are simple and well-made — grid tile, dark vanity, a window in the shower. Throughout the house the focus was on materials and finishes that are durable and easy to maintain, because a vacation home should feel like a break, not an ongoing project.

Amaranth House at dusk. The house runs entirely on electricity — no gas line required. Heating, cooling, hot water, cooking are all electric, and the mechanical systems were kept deliberately simple, so the house is easy to run year-round with minimal fuss.

The screened porch sits at the east end of the great room, just off the kitchen. It keeps the bugs out, extends the season, and in a house built for big gatherings, tends to be where people end up.

The garage was designed with a similar logic — large enough to park in, but it opens fully so it can serve as covered outdoor space when the weather is rainy.

The staircase at Amaranth House, with wood treads, black and wood railings, and tall narrow windows at the landing. It's one of the spots in the house where the two-bar offset really pays off, letting light into an interior that could otherwise feel closed.

The great room runs the length of the one-storey wing, with south-facing sliding doors to the view beyond. Living room at the west end, dining in the middle, kitchen and screened porch at the east end.

At the kitchen, a long island handles food prep on one side and seats five on the other. There is ample space to move around the island. The kitchen is an easy, flowing space for lots of people to cook and eat together.

Introducing Amaranth House, a new vacation home on a broad country property north of Toronto.

Our clients wanted somewhere for their extended family to come together — all arriving from different parts of the province, all under one roof. The house is organized as two offset bars: a single-storey wing for the shared spaces, and a two-storey wing for the bedrooms. A large, screened porch sits at the east end of the building off the kitchen.

An unassuming exterior – grey wood cladding and metal roof – houses a lot of togetherness and function.

Earth Day is a good reminder that the choices we make in design, like selecting materials, systems, building orientation, and more, add up to something much bigger than any single project.

It's the small decisions, made carefully, over and over that makes the impact. We can do that, together. That's the power of sustainable architecture.

Happy Earth Day from all of us at Solares. 🌍 🏡 🌱

One of the most important renovation decisions is knowing what *not* to change.

In our Parkway Renovation project, the second floor, which was already working well, was left untouched. This allowed time, budget, and attention to focus where it would have the greatest impact on daily life: the ground floor and basement.

Thoughtful renovations aren’t about doing more. They’re about understanding what matters most and making careful decisions around that.

Good design often starts with restraint.

Basements don’t have to feel like leftovers.

Here, the lower level was transformed into a true part of daily life. It holds space to play, relax, host guests, and move easily between indoors and out via the rear mudroom.

The interior design for this renovation was down by the homeowner herself. It tastefully balances energy and calm, making room for both family togetherness and quiet retreat.

Renovations work best when they reflect and support how people actually live day-to-day.

Creating open, light-filled spaces often means making careful choices behind the walls.

Strategic structural upgrades made it possible to open the rear of this home, increasing daylight and connection to the backyard, without rebuilding the entire house or altering its street presence.

Thoughtful renovation isn’t about doing everything — it’s about doing the right things, in the right places.
