One disclosure first: Casa Verde Distribution is Benji's sister company and an official distributor of LECHUZA planters and PON substrate in Canada. So take this as an interested party being specific. 🌿

Here is the thing people get backwards. A mineral substrate is not the light option. It is heavier. LECHUZA's own shops list a 12 L bag of PON at about 10.8 kg, several times heavier per litre than a peat-based mix. For a row of lobby planters, or anything on a raised floor, ask the building before you commit.

Soil is still the easier call for most desk and mid-size plants. Familiar, forgiving, simple to refresh.

We're hiring in Vancouver! 🌿

Benji's has spent over 40 years helping offices across Toronto and Vancouver feel a little more alive, with plants cared for by people who actually love the work. Clients like Shopify, CBRE and WeWork trust us to keep their spaces green — and now we're looking for a Plant Maintenance Technician to join our growing Vancouver team.

You don't need experience — just a genuine interest in plants, an eye for detail, and a valid driver's licence. We'll train you to water, prune, fertilize and groom plants at client offices on a schedule we provide, and you'll get to see the results of your work every single day.

Part-time to start (weekday hours), $25–$32/hour, with room to grow as our Vancouver business expands.

There is a particular moment on a new office floor: the team walks in for the first time, and either the space feels finished or it does not.

Palo Alto Networks opened its Canadian headquarters in Toronto's Financial District, and the greenery was designed right into the millwork. Planters around the columns, a planter under the logo, window boxes along the desks, a sofa with a planter built into its back.

313 live plants in total, chosen planter by planter. Our technicians are back every week to water, feed, clean the leaves and prune, so the floor keeps looking the way it did on move-in day.

Thanks to Palo Alto Networks for letting us share the photos.

There's a white orchid on the reception desk, and nobody is quite sure whose job it is.

So three people water it, one of them generously, and by February it's gone. Office orchids rarely die of neglect. They die of enthusiasm.

Here's the whole routine: three ice cubes on the bark, once a week. That's about a quarter cup, roughly what the plant wants in seven days. Nobody has to guess, and nobody can accidentally give it a mug.

Just keep the cubes off the crown — that point in the centre where the leaves meet. Water sitting there is what actually kills them.

Poinsettias have a reputation for dying fast. They don't, really — they die fast in offices, which is a different problem.

And the most common culprit is the thing it arrived in. That decorative foil sleeve has no drainage. Water runs through the soil, pools at the bottom, and the roots sit in it. Root rot follows within a couple of weeks, and it looks exactly like thirst: droopy, yellowing lower leaves. So people water more, and that's that.

Take the foil off on day one, or punch holes in the bottom. One minute, and you've prevented the most common way they go.

Not every plant can be saved, and we would rather say so plainly. 🌿

If the trunk is soft where it meets the soil, or the whole root ball comes apart brown and wet in your hands, that plant is not coming back. A collapsing feature plant in reception drags on for weeks while everyone quietly hopes it turns around.

A smaller plant with a few firm roots left, though, is almost always worth the attempt. Healthy roots are firm and pale. Rotted ones are brown or black, mushy, and come apart between your fingers.

Our new piece walks through the whole treatment, and it is honest about where treatment stops.

December in an office usually starts with someone volunteering to go up a ladder with a box of tangled lights.

Not at Adyen's Toronto office. We already look after the live plants on every floor there, so when the workplace team asked us to dress the space for the season, we were not working from a photo of somebody else's lobby. We knew the room.

Deep blue baubles, burlap ribbon, pine cones, and red berries as the one warm note. A tree by the floor-to-ceiling windows, garlands along the reception desk. Premium artificial indoors, so nothing sheds on the carpet and nobody waters anything. 🌿

Booking for the season closes October 31.

🌿 Join the Benji's team — we're hiring a Sales Development Representative!

For over 40 years we've brought plants into offices across the GTA, from Shopify and CBRE to WeWork. We're growing fast, and we're looking for someone who loves building relationships to help more workplaces go green.

You'll follow up with interested customers, visit their spaces, put together proposals, and help them say yes. It's a full-time role with $40K–$60K base + commission, a Health Spending Account, and real room to grow as the business does. A reliable vehicle is needed for site visits.

📍 Greater Toronto Area · On-site

Every office has had the conversation. Second week of January, the tree is still up, and somebody finally says it out loud: so who's taking this down?

Usually it lands on one person, alone, with a step ladder, in a considerably worse mood than whoever put it up.

That's the line item nobody budgets for. Not the tree — the afternoon, the storage bin that never quite closes again, and January.

If your team genuinely enjoys the decorating afternoon, keep it. We'd rather say that than sell you something you don't need. If you've had the January conversation once already, here's the honest math.

Either way, October 31 is the date. With us that's when package and colour get confirmed and a 50% deposit holds your install day. Doing it yourself, it's about when the good stuff sells out.
