We’ve been getting calls and messages lately from local businesses and apartment/condo buildings about phone solicitations saying their fire alarm communicator needs to be upgraded or switched to stay compliant.

Let’s clear that up.

A lot of these calls are coming from sales teams working off scripts, not from licensed fire alarm or security professionals, or qualified security consultants who actually know your building, your system, or local requirements.

ULC fire alarm monitoring in Canada is a certified and regulated service. It’s not just swapping out a communicator—it involves the right equipment, proper installation standards, signal transmission requirements, and certification through a ULC-listed monitoring provider.

Before making any changes, take a minute to:

✔ Check with your insurance provider
✔ Confirm with your local fire authority
✔ Speak with a qualified fire alarm or security professional, or security consultant

The reality is—not every system needs to be changed, and not every offer out there provides the same level of compliance or protection… especially when things like certification aren’t clearly explained.

And yes—a low monthly price might sound good—but when it comes to life safety, you want to know exactly what you’re getting.

At Selkirk Security, we don’t treat this like a sales pitch. This is life safety, and it carries real responsibility.

👉 If it’s about life safety, make sure you’re getting facts—not a sales script.

If you’ve received one of these calls and want a straight answer, give us a call. We’re always happy to take a look and point you in the right direction.

A quick reminder for property owners: Not all security advice comes from a security professional.

———

With the growing number of security systems being sold online, through telemarketing, door-to-door campaigns, and large national companies, many property owners are being approached by sales representatives rather than qualified security consultants.

In British Columbia, individuals selling alarm systems should hold a Security Worker Licence for alarm sales, which allows them to promote and sell security systems. However, this is different from the experience and training involved in Professional Security Consulting, where systems are designed based on a deeper assessment of a building’s risks and vulnerabilities.

The equipment itself is often quite capable. The real difference is who is evaluating your property and recommending the system.

Before agreeing to any security sales visit or installation, it is always wise to ask a few questions:

✔ Ask to see the person’s BC Government issued Security Worker Licence.
✔ Make sure you understand their role and qualifications.
✔ Review any monitoring agreement carefully, especially if it involves a long-term contract.
✔ Confirm whether you are purchasing the equipment or leasing it as part of the monitoring agreement.

At Selkirk Security Services, our system recommendations are reviewed by our own Licensed Security Consultant, ensuring security planning is based on professional assessment rather than sales alone.

🔥 Did you know?
If your fire alarm system uses only one communication path (like a phone line or internet connection), it may fail to send a signal if that path goes down.

That’s why the BC Fire Code and CAN/ULC-S561 standards require two independent communication paths — to make sure help is always on the way.

A quick check with your service provider can make all the difference.
✅ Dual-path = safer buildings.

After the recent power outages that occurred throughout the Kootenay's, there has been questions from the public as to how long should emergency lights run for: In British Columbia, Emergency Lights & Exit Signs are required to remain illuminated for a minimum of 30 minutes upon a power outage, as specified in the British Columbia Fire & Building Code. (These units must be tested once per month by the client by simply pressing the test button to ensure the lights turn on and then once per year a full maintenance & inspection must be completed by a 3rd party contractor operating in accordance with section 6.5.1.6. of the BCFC - w/ inspection tag installed on the unit).

Prepare for the 3G Sunset

Rogers has announced they will shut down their 3G network on July 31, 2025, with Bell and Telus following on Dec. 31, 2025.

Devices still using 3G technology will lose cellular connectivity after these dates, and some areas may experience reduced coverage even before the official shutdown. Upgrading to LTE technology is essential to maintain device functionality as LTE offers faster, more reliable connectivity, which is crucial for many systems. To avoid service disruptions, planning your upgrades in advance can minimize the need for additional service calls and ensure a smooth transition.
