I create architectural plans for home owners, developers, and contractors within the RDKB and RDCK regions of BC.

I regularly work with their zoning bylaws, OCP documents, flood plain bylaws etc. while preparing plans for clients. Central Kootenay, has requirements set out in checklists available on their website, while the Kootenay Boundary has their information displayed clearly with links to documents for requirements in different regions. The checklist works great as it clearly defines what is required. Both seem to have advantages and disadvantages to how they present the information.

Understanding these documents is challenging and I completely understand why residents are confused as they are constantly told different requirements from different building officials. It happens constantly.

As the district offices work to update their bylaws and regulations, it’s important that we bring these issues to light, and have the opportunity to make the system better.

Attention customers! I’ve been doing my best to hold my rates this year, but prepare to spend more on professional services as BC turns out their 2026 budget.

“At the same time, the budget expands the provincial sales tax (PST) to cover more services. This means some professional services—such as accounting, engineering, architectural work and certain commercial real estate services—will now be subject to PST, which could increase costs for businesses and, in some cases, consumers.”

Great way to increase housing development costs BC!
