I came across a quote from a French designer that I admire, Andree Putman:
“Artists help us to understand what is around us.” What does that mean? I think about this everyday in my studio staring at a blank canvas. Art can help us to look deeper, empty our preconceptions and to communicate with others without saying anything. I am always amazed at what others will see in a painting of mine. Listening to this teaches me to understand another’s feelings more deeply and realize that art as well as a thinking subject is very emotionally felt. Art is a communication between what we know and what we feel.

Judge Tanya Avchinnikova’s commentary:

“A still life of elegance and restraint. The arrangement is balanced, the forms clear, and the subtle use of color gives the work a timeless quality.”

Smoky and Purple at Dusk
Pastel 16 x 16 in.

I painted this as a tribute to J. M. W. Turner the British Romantic landscape painter who was know for achieving a glowing luminosity to his paintings. He did it with oils and glazing. Inspired by his technique I thought I would attempt to recreate what he was so successfully know for, in oils, in the pastel medium.
I approached painting this piece by gradually building up layers of closely related colour values of pastel. The many layers of pastel have created an impasto effect that shimmers and virtually glows. It is much more luminous when seen in person as pastels refract light the way no other medium can. If you have ever seen a pastel painting by Degas you will know what I mean.

Quince paintings from France.
It was such a pleasure to be able to pick quince from a 100 year old tree in the French countryside and then paint them. The smell of quince is devine. Although I didn't get a chance to cook anything from them I am going back in September and will put aside some time to make a quince jelly.
