Diversity is a fact. Inclusion is an action.

Truly public buildings accommodate all, regardless of ability, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, or belief.

How are we creating space for all to thrive?

Five weeks ago, we set out to share a series of videos that capture the magic we’ve felt in some of our favourite community buildings. Moments of connection. Of joy. Stories of support, friendship, and belonging, that make it clear that our physical environments can create opportunities for emotional connection.

We hope you enjoy our final installment of The Space Between: Post Polio.

“It’s not just a place for books. It’s a place for community.”

Don’t judge a book by its cover… or a library by its quiet facade.

The Space Between video series continues with Barbed Choir. A story about how Whistler’s resident rock choir transforms Whistler Public Library into a concert hall, so locals can make music together.

We spend a lot of time thinking about the transformational impact of community architecture and its role in shaping the ways we connect. But this evolution would not be possible without the diverse contributions of the people who inhabit these spaces.

They expand on and repurpose a building's design, injecting their unique needs, perspectives and talents into how these facilities are used. So our civic centers remain vibrant, safe, and accessible – generations after they're built.

No story makes this more clear than Barbed Choir, the second release in The Space Between video series.

Their motto may be "strong and wrong", but the music Whistler’s Barbed Choir creates together is an integral part of what makes this community sing.

There's more to come! Follow along every morning until Dec 6th because there are more stories to share. Here and on hcma.ca.

After 40 years, we've heard a lot of stories emphasizing the importance of The Space Between; the humble, sometimes overlooked, in-between spaces, where spontaneous connections occur and magic happens.

Now we're sharing six of them with you!

Join us over the coming weeks as the talented Kahani Pictures takes us inside some of our favourite community buildings to tell these stories of connection and community.

A new video will be released here on Facebook (and hcma.ca) every Tuesday morning up until December 6th – you’re invited to follow along!

Our Story

HCMA Architecture + Design challenges the traditional boundaries of architectural practice by asking one question. “How do we achieve the maximum positive impact through design?”

That curiosity leads to technological innovations, valuable community engagements, and ultimately to positive changes in people’s lives. From planning and design, to consultation and evaluation, we take projects beyond what’s expected, beyond what’s trending, to deliver buildings that maximize potential.

In the ways that we work, design, give back, and connect - we are catalysts for healthier, more creative, more engaged communities. If you want to build magnetic, public spaces with lasting social value, you’ve come to the right place.
