The last public firewood cutting opportunity for 2025 is this weekend, November 28 & 29. Permits are available for Link Mill area in Port Alberni.

After this weekend, we’ll be pausing the program in anticipation of adverse weather conditions, and using this time to redesign the program based on your feedback. The growing demand for firewood needs a new approach.

We’ll share an update in spring 2026. To learn more about the pause, or to obtain your firewood permit for this weekend, visit: https://www.mosaicforests.com/firewood.

📍 For this weekend, Port Alberni- Link Mill area permits are now available.

We acknowledge the strong public demand for more and better firewood cutting opportunities. Balancing that demand with safe, accessible sites and operational considerations has been challenging at times, but we continue to explore improvements for the program. Updates on its progress will be shared as they come about.

Based on feedback asking for more public firewood opportunities further south, this weekend we’re pleased to offer permits for blocks outside of Chemainus. Before purchasing, note that permit holders can expect a 30 kilometre drive down an unpaved resource road to reach the firewood areas.

📣Please plan accordingly—conditions and inventory can change on short notice!

Firewood permits are also available for Link Mill in Port Alberni.

Purchase here: https://www.mosaicforests.com/firewood

We know some folks weren’t able to purchase firewood permits online last weekend due to issues with PayPal. We’re sorry to hear this and understand it was frustrating, especially for those planning out their weekend. We’re looking into the issue so that it doesn’t happen again for this weekend’s permits. Going forward, we’ll also be exploring other payment processing options to make for a better user experience.

More info on this weekend’s firewood opportunities will be available this Thursday afternoon.

Following the restart of our public firewood program last week, we learned that providing more info in advance would be helpful. Here are answers to your recent questions – thanks for bringing them to our attention.

🟢What are this weekend’s firewood opportunities?
Available for Saturday, Oct. 25 & Sunday, Oct. 26 are locations in Port Alberni (Link Mill) and Nanaimo (Red Gate). Where applicable, online permits for purchase are now available at https://www.mosaicforests.com/firewood

🟢Where is Red Gate?
You’ll find this firewood collection location just off Nanaimo River Road in south Nanaimo, about halfway between South Forks Road and White Rapids Road

🟢Why is Red Gate different than your other firewood options? (e.g. cash only, not online)
As a grad fundraiser, Vancouver Island University forestry students are leading this firewood opportunity, with Mosaic donating the firewood & assisting with the collection site

🟢Why are prices different among locations?
Prices have been adjusted for some locations to help offset costs incurred by transporting the wood to a location more accessible to the public

🟢Why can’t I buy a permit online?
If online permitting is not available it’s for two reasons: 1) the week’s selections haven’t been released yet 2) all firewood permits available for purchase for the weekend have been sold
