SHAPE Architecture worked closely with City of Burnaby staff and stakeholders to transform 1,000 square metres of vacant space within the existing facility into new recreation and music program areas. The layout maintains clear sightlines into the activity spaces, allowing arts and recreation to be visibly on display within the public environment.

A key feature is the two high-performance music practice rooms which were detailed with high performance acoustic assemblies and increased which effectively eliminated sound transmission and allowed the rooms to be located directly off the main public corridor with large glazed openings.

Rhodo is an exquisite collection of boutique 2-, 3-, and 4-bedroom west coast contemporary townhomes, ideally situated in the heart of Fairfield, Victoria, BC. The design artfully reinterprets the traditional hip roof, seamlessly blending with the neighborhood's character across three distinct blocks. These thoughtfully clustered structures foster a sense of community, creating a central spine that gracefully connects residents to each other and invites the vibrant west coast spirit of the Fairfield neighborhood into everyday living.

The UBC Recreation Centre is a state-of-the-art facility that reflects the university’s commitment to community health, wellness, diversity, and inclusion. At its center is a multi-height lobby that serves as the building’s primary circulation spine, linking the fitness areas, gymnasia, change rooms, and multipurpose spaces.

A bright yellow feature stair anchors the atrium, acting as both a sculptural focal point and an intuitive wayfinding element. The welcoming lobby showcases multi-level movement throughout the building, with layered sightlines and varied circulation paths that create a dynamic and engaging spatial experience.

UBC Recreation Centre North Receives Occupancy Permit, Marking a Major Milestone for Campus Recreation
Vancouver, BC – [June 24,2025] — SHAPE Architecture is proud to announce that the highly anticipated UBC Recreation Centre North officially received its occupancy permit earlier this month, signaling the final stages of preparation before welcoming students, staff, and community members into the brand-new facility.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for UBC Athletics & Recreation, whose vision and dedication have brought the project to life. Recreation Centre North is poised to become a vibrant hub for health, wellness, and community engagement on campus, offering state-of-the-art amenities for fitness, sports, and programming.
“Congratulations to UBC Athletics on this incredible accomplishment,” said Nick Sully, Managing Partner at SHAPE Architecture. “This new facility represents UBC’s ongoing commitment to student well-being and to providing inclusive, world-class spaces for recreation and connection.”

Lakeview is a six-story mixed-use rental residential project, thoughtfully integrating 104 residential units with the site’s existing Church program. The housing portion of the project offers a mix of Studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom rental units, with 31% held to affordable rental unit standards.

The renewed church program and the residential amenity spaces flank the East arm of the ground floor and offer a shared multicultural space that can spill outside to a protected courtyard. These spaces encourage the existing community and new residences to congregate and develop new connections.

As a Passive House Certified timber framed building, Lakeview contributes to the highest building standards for efficient, healthy, and durable design with low environmental impacts.
