A charter for jurisdiction in "Building Material, Construction and Fuel Truck Drivers"
was issued in January 1946 and Teamsters Local 213 was created with
Custer Solem as Local 213's first elected secretary-treasurer and principal
officer. The 1950's saw the start of huge growth in our province and our
construction members were involved in many large projects. Work in
road building, pipleine and ready mix expanded through the next
several years. Merging with Local 181 in 1972 and Local 351 in 1983 expanded our
membership and the industries we represented. Today, Local 213
represents members in hundreds of diverse fields. From the begining, Local 213 has been driven by the goal to better
the lives of our members on and off the job. Local 213's Health & Welfare Plan
and Pension Plan, initiated many years ago, still provides excellent
benefits for our members today. Our training programs have ranged from construction warehousemen
training in the late 1960's to our online courses, heavy equipment
training and our seminars for our shop stewards.

BC BUILDING TRADES PRESS RELEASE

Conservative plan to cancel Massey Tunnel replacement would immediately put 200 tradespeople out of work and another 1,700 jobs at risk

The BC Building Trades is sounding the alarm over the BC Conservatives’ plan to cancel the Massey Tunnel replacement. The move would effectively fire 200 people currently working on site and put another 1,700 construction jobs at risk.

“Committing to cancelling a project that’s already underway is shocking,” said Brynn Bourke, Executive Director of the BC Building Trades. “More than 200 women and men who are currently working at this site would lose their jobs and the paycheques that support their families – and commuters would be stuck in traffic even longer.”

Crews have been on site since January. The significant construction underway now includes:

-Crews driving steel piles for the walls of the casting basin on Deas Island, where the tunnel sections will be built.
-Barge crews sealing off a bay with a steel wall on the Richmond shoreline.
-Crews building access roads and a 300-metre bridge to Deas Island.
-Crews moving earth for the tunnel approaches, demolishing the Canadian Fishing Company facility on the Richmond side and relocating power and telecom lines, working up to 24 hours a day, six days a week.

On October 15, the BC Conservatives promised to cancel the in-progress tunnel project and revive the bridge plan. They offered no planning, no current costing estimate, no construction start date, and no opening date. Cancelling would also put at risk up to $3 billion in federal funding already secured for the tunnel replacement project. According to the project’s report (p.3), $581 million had already been spent on construction as of June.

“Tradespeople build this province,” said Bourke. “Callously firing them, with no regard for their futures or livelihoods, is an insult to the people who devote their lives to building the roads, bridges, and schools we need to build a good life here – and to commuters who want a new crossing built.”

Statement from Teamsters Local 213 Principal Officer Tony Santavenere:

"BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson says he wants to scrap the Massey Tunnel replacement project.

Let me be clear: scrapping this project would be a huge mistake and a giant waste of money.

Construction activities have been underway on the project for more than nine months now. More than a half-billion dollars have been spent on the project. 200 workers have been on site, working to make this project a reality for Metro Vancouver commuters.

Why waste that time, effort and money? It makes no sense.

It is true, this project has faced challenges, but cancelling it now would be throwing good money after bad.

The sites are prepared, the environmental assessment is almost done and major construction could start as soon as January. That’s just two-and-a-half months away.

On top of all that, the federal government has committed up to $3 billion to pay for the project. We can’t afford to lose that crucial investment in our infrastructure.

Lorne Doerkson is deeply misguided on this. Scrapping the Massey Tunnel replacement now will only waste money already spent, add to costs, extend the completion timeline and leave frustrated commuters stuck in traffic for years longer.

Teamsters Local 213 calls on the BC Conservative leader to come to his senses and reverse this commitment."
