Services for your PTAC unit

PTAC, or packaged terminal air conditioner, is a type of ductless air conditioning system.

This system is popular in big hotels and condo buildings. PTACs are installed on the exterior wall of a building by keeping the condensing unit outside. However, the evaporator side of the unit is kept inside.

A PTAC can provide residents or tenants of a building with both heating and cooling, though many PTAC units are designed to provide cooling only.

The units can function in just one room, or in a particular area of a building.

Luminary HVAC is pleased to provide a range of PTAC services:

• Annual maintenance
• Unit upgrade
• Installation or repair, including emergency repair

Our skilled and experienced team is well-versed in working with several PTAC manufacturers, including Amana, Carrier, Islandaire, Mcquay, Perfect Comfort, Applied Comfort, GE Appliance, GE Zoneline, and more.

The best time to replace a furnace

This time of year, your furnace may be the last thing on your mind. But if it has needed frequent repairs, it may need to be replaced. And now is the best time to do it, when you don’t need to urgently heat your space.

A common question we hear at Luminary HVAC is, “How much will it cost to replace a gas furnace?” It depends.

A high-efficiency furnace replacement costs $2,000 to $5,000. The price depends on brand, model, cost of labour, product warranty, the size of your home or business, and more.

Luminary HVAC offers installation services at a flat rate.

We also have years of experience working with individuals, landlords, property managers, commercial developers, and business and condo owners; and have serviced all types of buildings, including offices, hotels, motels and townhouses.

Not sure if it’s time to replace your furnace, no matter what type of building it’s in? Call us to find out.

Maximize your air conditioning this summer

You can maximize the air conditioning at your large residential or commercial property this summer by completing a few simple steps. Luminary HVAC suggests:

• Closing the blinds where it’s possible. Closing blinds or curtains helps prevent the sun’s heat from raising the temperature indoors, while preventing cold air from escaping.

• Using a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans don’t make a room cooler, but they can displace hot air and help the room feel more comfortable when used with an air conditioning unit.

• Changing the air filter regularly. Change the filter every one to three months, so the air conditioner won’t have to work as hard.

• Unblocking and vacuuming the vents. Keeping the vents free of debris and clear of objects, such as plants or furniture, is one of the best ways to maximize the efficiency of your air conditioning unit.

Find out if you need a new air filter

Spring is finally here, and while the temperature is changing, something else might need to change, too: Your air filter.

In a few weeks, your air conditioning unit may be working overtime. That means there’s a greater chance of it drawing in dirt, dust and other particles, which can potentially clog the filter.

By replacing the filter, you’ll not only keep your unit running efficiently, you’ll be keeping your energy bills down.

You can find out if your filter needs to be changed by pulling it out and holding it up to a bright light. Can you see light through the filter? If you can’t, it’s time for a new one. Not sure if you can see through it enough? Luminary HVAC can help you with that.

Our skilled and experienced technicians will even examine your air conditioning unit to make sure it’s completely ready to take on summer.

Your HVAC glossary

Sometimes, when you’re receiving service from specialists, they’ll use a term you’ve never heard before, and it’s important to understand what they mean. So here are a few common HVAC terms from Luminary HVAC:

Charging a system: Adding coolant/refrigerant to an HVAC system.

Compressor: A pump that raises the pressure of refrigerant gas.

Fan coil unit: A device that uses a coil and a fan to heat or cool a room.

Heat exchanger: Heat is transferred through this device to a cold or warm area or surface.

Heat gain: The amount of heat added or created in a designated area.

Package unit: A heating and cooling system in one outdoor unit.

Plenum space: An enclosed space inside a building used for airflow.

Ask your HVAC contractor to explain any terms you don’t understand. A good contractor will expect questions.

Tankless water heater benefits

Did you know a tankless water heater can save you up to 35% on your energy bills compared to traditional water heater tanks?

Tankless water heaters have sensors, unlike traditional water heaters that keep running until there’s a manual shutdown.

Another great benefit of tankless water heaters is they don’t emit greenhouse gases.

If your large residential or commercial building uses an average of 40 gallons of hot water daily, Luminary HVAC recommends you consider using a tankless water heater.

Tankless water heaters are a good source of water and allow your residents or tenants to carry out their daily activities, such as showering, doing laundry, and washing the dishes.

Luminary HVAC can evaluate the options for your building, help you understand how a tankless water heater operates, and do the installation, maintenance and repair.

Start saving on your energy bills today. Contact us for more information.

The best air conditioning brands

If you’re in the market for a new air conditioning unit for your large residential or commercial property, you may be wondering which one is best for your building.

The team at Luminary HVAC has installed, repaired and maintained many brands of air conditioning units over the years. Based on our experience, we’ve found these brands come out on top:

Trane, Lennox, and Carrier provide quality AC and furnace HVAC systems. These brands feature excellent designs, have had longevity in the market, and have a top-notch reputation.

For example, Costco, one of the largest retailers in Canada, has hundreds of warehouses. It uses Lennox for its heating and cooling systems.

Home Depot, another large retailer, uses Trane in its stores. Trane has many customers, and units that excel in their performance.

Similarly, Amana and Goodman are also great choices.

Is rain affecting your HVAC system?

We know what springtime means in Ontario: Rain, and lots of it. Grass and plants may like it, but your HVAC unit? It depends.

Outdoor HVAC units are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, such as rainstorms. Flying debris in a bad storm can potentially damage rooftop units, however.

Your outdoor heat pump unit is really only susceptible to damage when there’s flooding. If water starts to partially submerge the unit, the wiring, electronics, and motor could get damaged.

If the outdoor unit is partially or fully submerged, turn off the HVAC system at the electrical panel. Then call Luminary HVAC so we can come do an inspection before it’s turned back on again.

Other than extreme situations (like flooding), your outdoor unit should be fine. But if you have any concerns about the HVAC system at your large residential or commercial building after a rainstorm, call Luminary HVAC.

Benefits of a ductless air conditioner

Often referred to as a mini-split system, a ductless air conditioner is a type of air conditioning unit that doesn’t require ductwork for installation, unlike a traditional HVAC system. Luminary HVAC has found it has several benefits:

• A ductless AC is able to distribute cold or warm air more evenly than traditional units, resulting in a more comfortable temperature in your large residential or commercial building.

• Ductless systems contain filters that collect airborne particles, such as dust and pollen. In addition, they constantly circulate fresh air.

• Ductless systems are efficient and can heat and cool buildings at a fraction of the cost of other heating and cooling units.

• They’re flexible regarding location, small in size, and have a more aesthetically pleasing appearance than other add-on units, such as window air conditioners.

If a ductless air conditioner sounds like something you’d like for your building, contact Luminary HVAC for a free estimate.

3 benefits of an HVAC maintenance contract

Luminary HVAC knows that when it comes to caring for your residential or commercial building’s HVAC system, maintenance tasks can easily slip down your to-do list.

One solution is an HVAC maintenance contract. Here are three benefits to having one:

• Early problem detection. Problems in your furnace and air conditioner can cause more damage the longer they run without being fixed. Catching a problem early is also the best way to avoid costly repairs.

• Improved energy efficiency. Consistent tune-ups once or twice a year will help your furnace and air conditioner run more efficiently year-round — and save you money on your energy bills.

• Priority service. Nothing is worse than being stuck without heat or air conditioning when you really need it. Maintenance contract customers can enjoy priority service from their HVAC provider.

Let Luminary HVAC look after the maintenance of your HVAC system while you focus on other priorities. Contact us for more information.
