🌡️ Summer Safety | Heat Is a Hazard — and Leadership Treats It Like One

Summer in Ontario means peak season for utility and infrastructure work — and it brings a hazard that’s easy to underestimate: heat.

Heat stress isn’t a comfort issue. It’s a safety issue. Fatigue, dehydration, and reduced focus in high temperatures put crews at real risk — and on a utility site, a lapse in focus has consequences. That’s why managing heat isn’t left to individual crews to figure out. It’s led.

OE’s approach to summer field safety:

• Hydration built into the workday — water and rest accessible, not an afterthought
• Work/rest cycles adjusted to conditions — leadership makes the call, not the clock
• PPE and clothing appropriate for heat — protection that accounts for the season
• Supervisors trained to recognize the early signs of heat stress — and empowered to act

Zero-harm in July looks different from January — but the principle is the same. The conditions change; the standard doesn’t. Protecting our crews through the season is also how we keep our Customers’ projects safe and on track — and the responsibility for that standard starts at the top.

Stay safe out there this season. Hydrate, watch your crew, and don’t treat the heat as just part of the job.

🦺 Safety Snapshot | Field Tip of the Week

The most important words on any utility site aren’t in the scope of work. They’re “let’s stop.”

This week’s field tip is about stop-work authority — the right of any crew member, at any level, to pause work when something isn’t right. Not to ask permission. To stop, then sort it out.

Almost every company has it on paper. In practice, it only works if the culture backs it:

• Everyone on site has the authority — the newest apprentice, not just the foreman.
• Stopping work is treated as the right call, never as someone slowing the job down
• The concern gets resolved before work resumes — not waved off to keep the schedule
• Leadership thanks the person who stopped — because the alternative is far more costly

Here’s what makes it leadership: a crew only uses stop-work authority if they believe they’ll be supported for it. That belief is built by how supervisors respond the first time someone calls it — and every time after.

A job paused for the right reason is never lost time. It’s the system working exactly as it should — protecting the crew, and protecting the Customer’s site from the far costlier alternative. That’s how zero-harm holds up under real conditions.

🏗️ 30 Years Strong | Built on Accountability

Thirty years of safe delivery isn’t a streak. It’s a system — and someone owns it.

In utility services, safety records aren’t held by luck or good intentions. They’re held by operational accountability: clear standards, the systems to enforce them, and leadership that takes responsibility when conditions in the field don’t meet the bar. That responsibility doesn’t sit with the crew alone. It starts at the top.

What accountability looks like in OE’s operations:

• Standards that are defined and documented — not left to interpretation on site
• Supervisors accountable for conditions, not just completion — the how matters as much as the done
• Audit and inspection that verifies the standard is being met — not just stated
• Incident and near-miss review that drives change — every lesson feeds the next pre-task plan
• Leadership that measures itself by the safety of the people doing the work

That’s the difference between a company that talks about safety and one that has delivered it for 30 years. Accountability isn’t a value on a wall — it’s an operating system, owned from the top down.

It’s what has kept our crews safe and our Customers confident for three decades — and the standard OE carries into the next 30 years.

🌍 World Environment Day | Responsible Work, Every Day

Today is World Environment Day — a global recognition of our shared responsibility to protect the natural environment we all depend on.

In utility services, environmental responsibility isn’t a once-a-year statement — it’s built into how the work is done. Hydro excavation is, by design, a precise, low-impact way to expose buried infrastructure, protecting utilities and surrounding ground in ways traditional digging can’t.

For OE, working responsibly means:
• Precision excavation methods that minimize ground disturbance and damage
• Proper containment, handling, and disposal of spoil and materials
• Restoration that returns sites to original or better condition
• Decisions made with the long-term health of communities and infrastructure in mind

Thirty years of work across Ontario has only deepened a simple commitment: the right way to do the work is the responsible way — every site, every day. It’s a standard our Customers and the communities we work in count on.

On World Environment Day, OE recognizes that protecting the environment and delivering reliable infrastructure are not competing goals. Done right, they’re the same goal.

🛠️ Fleet & Service Spotlight | The Standard Behind the Equipment

A truck that’s ready to work on a Monday morning didn’t get that way by accident. It got there because someone set the standard — and held to it.

OE’s fleet — hydrovac units, subsurface utility engineering equipment, restoration and traffic control assets — represents real capability. But capability sitting in a yard isn’t worth much. What turns equipment into safe, reliable delivery is the discipline behind it: the maintenance, the inspections, and the readiness checks that happen before a crew ever leaves for site.

The standard behind OE’s equipment:

• Preventive maintenance on schedule — not run-to-failure, but planned to keep equipment safe and job-ready
• Pre-trip and pre-task inspections that catch problems before they reach a jobsite
• Equipment matched to the conditions — the right asset for the ground, not just the nearest available unit
• A maintenance record that means a Customer’s schedule isn’t at the mercy of an avoidable breakdown

This is where safety and reliability start — long before the work does. A well-maintained fleet is a safer fleet, and keeping it that way is a leadership commitment, not a line item.

Thirty years of dependable delivery across Ontario comes down to one discipline: equipment held to a standard, every day, by the people responsible for it — so our Customers get a crew that shows up ready and a job that stays on schedule.

🛠️ Large Projects, Built by People

The largest, most complex utility projects in Ontario aren't defined by equipment lists or engineered drawings. They're defined by the people who execute them — day after day, site after site, through the challenges that never make it into the scope.

OE's role on major infrastructure programs — municipal upgrades, large-scale utility corridor work, regional resiliency projects — is built on the same foundation as every other project OE delivers: experienced crews, disciplined operations, and leadership that stays accountable from first mobilization through final restoration.

What makes OE effective on large, complex work:

• Depth of crew — enough experienced people to staff demanding schedules without compromising quality
• Integrated service delivery — hydrovac, SUE, road cutting, restoration, traffic control, and project coordination under one accountable team
• Supervisors and project managers who have run this kind of work before — not learning as they go
• A 30-year operating track record across Ontario — references, relationships, and results

Complex projects aren't delivered by companies. They're delivered by teams. And OE's team is the reason Customers trust OE with the work that can't go sideways.

Planning a major utility project? Let's talk about what disciplined ex*****on — and the right crew — actually looks like.

📍 Event Spotlight | OE on the Course — May 25 & 26

OE Utility Services will be out on the course next week — supporting two industry events that bring together the people who build, maintain, and plan Ontario's infrastructure.

📅 Monday, May 25 — Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame Tournament (hosted by Bridgecon Construction Ltd)
📍 Royal Woodbine Golf Course

📅 Tuesday, May 26 — The Utility Contractors’ Association of Ontario (UCA) Golf Tournament
📍 Emerald Hills Golf Club

Both events are strong opportunities to reconnect with partners, meet new Customers, and have the conversations that happen best outside the boardroom.

If you're attending either event and want to connect with OE's team, reach out ahead of the tournament to arrange a time. Our team will be on-site for networking, the round, and the post-event reception.

Industry events like these are part of how OE has built relationships across Ontario for 30 years — face-to-face, on the course, and grounded in the shared work of keeping infrastructure moving.

We look forward to see you out there!

👥 People First | Field Crew Spotlight

Behind every OE project is a crew — and behind every crew is a set of decisions, conversations, and judgment calls that never make it into a progress report.

The foreman who rechecks a locate because something doesn't look right. The operator who slows down on a congested site because the plan on paper doesn't match the ground in front of them. The labourer who speaks up in the morning briefing because they spotted something everyone else missed. The apprentice who asks the question nobody else wanted to ask.

That's where safe, on-schedule, quality project delivery actually lives. In the field. In the crew.

OE's Field Crew Spotlight is about recognizing the people whose daily work — often quiet, rarely celebrated externally — is the reason Customers across Ontario have trusted OE for 30 years.

To our crews:

• The standards you hold are the standards OE is known for
• The mentorship you offer the next generation is how this industry stays strong
• The work you do matters — to Customers, to communities, and to the people who work alongside you

Thank you for the standard you set. Every site. Every shift.

🍁 Victoria Day Long Weekend — Safety Before the Break

The Victoria Day long weekend marks the unofficial start of summer in Ontario — and the start of peak season for utility, construction, and infrastructure work across the province.

For everyone heading into a long weekend — whether it's a project wrap-up, a drive north, or a pause before the season ramps up — OE wishes you a safe break.

Before the weekend starts, a few reminders for crews and contractors wrapping up today:

• Confirm locate status on any site that will be paused over the weekend — don't leave it assumed
• Secure equipment, excavations, and traffic control zones before crews leave the yard
• Double-check communication protocols — who's on call, who's covering, and how escalation works
• If you're driving — watch for long-weekend traffic, construction zones, and cyclists sharing the roads

Thirty years of safe delivery isn't built on the easy days. It's built on the discipline to finish the week the same way we start it — deliberately, and safely.

Have a safe Victoria Day long weekend from the OE team.
