John bought land in the Tonasket valley a few years ago. His plot is remote, beautiful, and not easy to build on. He wanted a home that fit the place: modern scandinavian design, built right, without the usual chaos of a custom build in the middle of nowhere. That's what brought him to Blend.

Recently, our project team drove down to support our local build partner, TimberQuest Homes, through the critical phase of assembly. Specifically the glulam er****on and SIP installation. We don't just deliver a kit, we are also committed to being on site when it matters most, making sure the build goes right for the client and the builder.

Getting materials to a site like this is no small feat. Our partners at and got the glulams and SIPs there in pristine condition. Watching them come trucking up the road was so exciting. Prefab components arriving on a remote site, ready to go.

The Blend system was built to serve clients and builders. Improving timelines, cost, performance, and the experience of building something you'll live in for decades. Great design shouldn't require you to figure it out alone.

This week we hosted Vierra Fine Homes, our California build partner, on Vancouver Island to check out some of our build sites. We stopped by an epic Rancher 10 in Maple Bay in the middle of standing up glulams.

When most people hear "prefab," they think temporary.
A placeholder. A starter. Something you'll outgrow.

They don't picture a live-edge dining table where three siblings will sit for decades.
Or French doors that open to the same shoreline their grandparents walked.
Or a home carried by 120 years of family history.

This Rancher 7 was never a stepping stone.
It's a place to keep coming home to.

The cedar cladding was milled locally in Sooke by Madrone Milling, finished to weather naturally with the coast. Over time it will soften into the same grey as the rocks and the trees around it- sitting more quietly in the landscape with every year that passes.

As a builder, you learn early on that no project goes exactly to plan.

A flash storm appears the day of the foundation pour. The hardware you spec’d is backordered because of a strike at a port you’ve never heard of. The permit sits at the municipality for six weeks longer than anyone expected.
You adjust. You figure it out. You find a way.

As a dad, you learn that fatherhood is the same.

You had a blueprint in your head. The version of yourself who had all the answers. Planned the schedules, ordered the materials. You knew exactly how it was going to go.
Then the site conditions changed and you were improvising before the first coffee went cold.
But you show up. Even when it’s raining. You measure twice. You adapt the plan. You keep on building.

The best homes we’ve built weren’t the ones that went perfectly to plan.
They’re the ones you can look back on and still see the care in every detail.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there- especially the ones building alongside us.
The ones who poured the foundation years ago and the ones still breaking ground. The bonus dads who stepped onto someone else’s job site and made it their own. The dog and cat dads who absolutely count. And the dads-to-be getting ready to try their best to follow the blueprint.

Some rooms frame the view. This one just gets out of the way.

This is The Simple Peak in Port Renfrew, one of our recent builds on Vancouver Island. The photo doesn't fully capture what it feels like to stand in this room. Morning light across polished concrete, the mountains right there beyond the glass. The line between the house and the forest outside gets pretty thin.

We talk a lot about the visual side of windows, but here's a number worth knowing: windows account for up to 25-30% of a home's heating and cooling energy use. Where you put them, how big they are, and how they're oriented affects how a home performs year-round, not just how it photographs.

Each wall section between our glulam beams can hold a window up to 6 feet wide by 7 feet tall. Because the beams do most of the structural work, we can put one in nearly every single bay (with proper load calculations from the SIP manufacturer, of course).
In a two-storey model like this one, that's two per section, stacked to the ceiling.

We can also design the gable ends with full floor-to-ceiling glazing. Imagine standing in this room and instead of a wall behind you, it's nothing but glass, treetops, and mountain all the way up.

For anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Brett, you know that he has a way of making you feel at ease, even if he was a total stranger five minutes ago. 🖤

Brett just celebrated his first year at Blend, and somehow it already feels like he’s always been here. He’s always willing to share what he knows, take on more, and stay curious about what’s possible.

As one of our Project Managers, he brings the kind of calm to a project that’s hard to teach: the sort where clients feel heard, trades feel supported, and nothing goes sideways without a plan.

He’s also mid-build on his own home, which means the start of our weekly team meetings include a bonus segment on his latest design obsession that none of us signed up for- but all of us look forward to.

We recently asked Brett a few questions about his approach:

On project management:
"I try to bring a sense of calm and consistency to projects. Construction can become stressful and chaotic really quickly, and I care a lot about making sure people feel supported and informed- whether that's the client, consultants, or trades on site."

On what sets him apart:
“I’m naturally drawn to design, building science and problem solving. I’m always looking for ways to make processes smoother, more efficient, and better thought out while improving quality and the overall vision."

On what he genuinely cares about:
"I truly enjoy what I do and genuinely care about the people and projects I’m involved with. Clients are trusting you to help manage the build of their home, and I don't take that lightly."

How important are the details when it comes to building a vacation rental?

97% of travelers say amenities are a deciding factor when choosing a vacation rental. The details aren't a bonus, they're the reason people book.

When The Simple Peak began their build, those details came first.
A heated Surf Shack for boards and wetsuits. An outdoor firepit fit for your whole group. An outdoor shower to rinse the salt from your skin before the cold seeps in.
On the other side of the house, a hot tub, a cold plunge, and wood stored for the fireplace inside.
And throughout, large windows frame the surf break from the moment you wake up to the last wave of the day.
