On behalf of everyone involved at the NPH REACH Innovation Youth Construction Program, we congratulate all our recent graduates and wish them every success on their career paths in the skilled trades. As we end our most recent 4 year contract with Canada (ESDC, Youth Employment and Skills Strategy), I want to personally thank all of you for supporting us in this venture. I also wish to thank Canada for directly supporting this program, and all of our amazing community partners without whom we would not be able to provide the successful outcomes we have. Those partners include; John Howard Society/Job Gym (Amanda and team), YMCA Employment and Immigration Services (particular shout out to Kelly Jones and the Power of Trades team), Sean Porter and Metabo HPT team, Claire and Nora at the Welland Firehall Restoration Project team, Dana and Barb at NCDSB, Doug, Sarah and Taylor at Canadian Safety Group, Emily and Aisha at Apprenticesearch.com, Terri Jackson our success coach and counsellor, Don Cormier (Doncor) our website developer, Ralph and team at Battlefield Rentals, Brad and Julie at Castle Building Supplies, Terry and Sheri at Rona Welland, Andrea and the team at Tools in the Trades, Jesse at Rapid Response First Aid, Jennifer at Atlas Tools, Miles Smith Electrical, Justin Humphreys Masonry, Joe Warner at Centennial Construction, Niagara College, all our local employers, our volunteers (shout out to Lexx and John in particular), and all those in the community who continue to support us. We are taking some time away over the summer and will announce new projects and programs for the end of 2024 and into 2025. On behalf of myself and my team at REACH Innovation, thank you for your support and as always....please continue to watch this space.
Wishing You All A Very Happy Summer.

Since we launched the first pilot program (called Team ENERGI) back in 2009, we have worked with around 500 + youth facing barriers, mature workers seeking retraining, women seeking trades training, indigenous youth, and more recently newcomers from conflict zones around the world.

When we started none of the major funders provincial or federal would touch us, because they all said such a program would certainly fail in Niagara, as no one had or could every pull off such a complex program that served so many needs, from community economic development, to affordable housing improvment, to green retrofiting, to trades training and employment support, to connection with local employers and apprenticeships. Following our first 6 month pilot which NPH, Job Gym and Ontario Works helped fund on a per client basis, plus tapping into multiple capital improvement and green energy retrofit incentives, and with help from Niagara Regional Housing to advance funds so we could purchase materials for the work, the program took off and gained massive high profile media and public sector attention. Following that every funder wanted to be part of the project. What should have lasted 3 years, has now been going in one form or another for 15 years.

As we move forward we are going to focus attention back to innovative housing development and more targeted skills training programs. NPH and Reach continues to function well ahead of its time, and as such leads the way for others to hopefully follow. On behalf of us all we wish to thank all our community partners, sponsors, funders, staff, local contractors and employers and our many participants who have been part of this journey over the past 15 years. We wish you all Happy Holiday Season. See you in 2024 and we hope it is a better one for all, here in Niagara, in Canada and across the world. Peace. www.reachinnovation.ca

We would like to wish all our latest program graduates success on their future career paths. Whether local or having come from far away, each has embarked on a journey that began long before joining Reach. For some the journey has involved overcoming entrenched systemic barriers in particular for young women who want to learn and work equally alongside young men in the trades, while others have journeyed half way across the world to come to this great country, all following the legal pathway for permanent residency, some having lost family and friends in conflict areas and faced persecution. During Reach they learn how Canada is an often complex system of rules and regulations, codes of practice, certifications, licenses, with multiple levels of oversight and governance - it can be overwhelming and often tough to teach in a manner that everyone understands, but also a place of rights and freedoms that many countries do not share with their citizens, but are held for the privileged few. Along with all our amazing community partners, we are happy to be a small part of their collective journey. Within this group we see an incredible commitment to working hard and making a successful life for themselves and their families. Anyone who is interested in hiring, whether it be in construction, industrial, technology, sales and marketing, admin and finance, please contact me as we have many good young workers ready to work in many diverse fields. Thank you all for you ongoing support. Sincerely, David Young Reach Innovation Program Manager. Email: [email protected]. Website: www.reachinnovation.ca

Our thanks to past program graduate Joe Warner for taking time away from his work with Centennial Construction's busy infrastructure and site development division to come once again and provide instruction and applied skills training in mini-excavator and skid steer operation. Our team was able to work on several active community projects we are currently engaged with and develop their skills behind both types of machine. Joe's story is also featured in our Success Stories page on our website; https://www.reachinnovation.ca/success-stories. Equipment provided at reduced cost through Battlefield Equipment Rentals, and we thank all who support and contribute cash, in-kind or their time to support our programs and our participant's success.

Our thanks once more to the incredible team of Claire Masswohl and Nora Reid along with all the volunteers overseeing and assisting on the Welland Central Firehall Restoration Project. Claire and Nora, along with Reach graduate David Houser who has been working on the project, offered our current students a tour and talk about the history and the work involved in the restoration of this century old building, into a multi-use community centre with Heritage Display on the first and part of the second floor, with the third floor rented, potentially as a co-working space - a Hall of Honour for first responders will also be included in the building. Thanks and keep up the great work folks. . https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=welland%20central%20fire%20hall

Our thanks once more to Aisha Hussain and the amazing team at Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC), for visiting our Community Resource and Training Centre to meet with and assist our current REACH Innovation students. Among their many other community services HIEC represents apprenticesearch.com, which supports the national registry and provides support for both employers and workers seeking apprenticeships across all sectors. Our sincere thanks once again to the amazing design, develop and build team of Drew and Deanna Toth (Toth Group/Elevate Living) and Derek Brouwer (Brouwer Construction) for hosting our current group of Reach students through Phases 1 and 2 of their multi-residential, smart tech, rental apartment complex at 699 Niagara St Welland ON. Our students are arriving on the scene at a great time to get into the trades and Drew, Deanna and Derek have always been supportive of our work. Many of our graduates have over time become skilled trades people and some have even started their own business. We are happy to be able to show the students some of the innovative design/build projects currently taking place around Niagara. For local business looking to hire into either construction or industry/manufacturing sectors please connect with us via fb or our website (www.reachinnovation.ca).

This past Tues Sept 12, one of our students Isaac (a newcomer from South Sudan making a new life here in Niagara), had his bike stolen from downtown Welland, sadly pretty much a routine event these days, but the bike was also a gift from a friend at his local church and his only means of transport. I had heard of the folks at Port Colborne High School Broken Spoke Program (www.facebook.com/people/Port-Colborne-High-School-Broken-Spoke-Program/100064515887147/) so I reached out to the creator and coordinator Aubrey Foley who invited us to drop in. These are pics from that visit. I cannot say enough about this program and the great work the staff and students do. Not only did they find Isaac a great bike they simply gave it to him at no cost. While Isaac was sad to have lost his previous bike, I told him that Canada is full of great people like this who give and ask nothing in return. That we are a people who want to make life better for everyone and where everyone is treated with respect. Our sincere thanks to Aubrey, volunteers Bruce and Roger, and the coop students who are making a big difference to so many lives both here in Niagara and around the globe, all while learning skills and making friendships that will last a lifetime. And so it goes......thanks to you all.

Our Reach staff and students continue to find new crafts and projects to test their skills. Lead skills trainer Paul Jacques shown here leading the build on our first cedar strip canoe. Please continue to watch this space as we are about to launch our final youth construction skills program for 2023. REACH's reach (?) has been both considerable and rewarding these past 3 + years, overcoming some major challenges, and we appreciate all our staff, students, funders, community and corporate partners who have supported and continue to support our work in the community. Always staying ahead of the curve, leading the way in community development and creating momentum for positive change,
