Can first responders see your address?

Visible, standardized signs make it easier for emergency responders to find a home or business address quickly in the event of an emergency. Often, emergency responders are travelling to remote locations with address signage that is barely legible, if there is a sign at all, and every second counts.

The Cariboo Regional District has a program with local sign companies for standardized house numbering signs. The signs are available to all Cariboo-Chilcotin residents f Quesnel Sign Shop, Heritage Signworks in 100 Mile and Schickworks Signs & Stitches in Williams Lake.

All of the garbage from service calls and installations ends up going back to the office, along with the garbage from the office itself. From there, whatever can be recycled gets sorted out. Here are the numbers for January 2015 - December 2015:

Garbage: 39.5 pounds
Paper: 86 pounds
Cardboard: 124 pounds
Metal: 47 pounds
Electronics: 68.5 pounds
Batteries: 152.5 pounds
Percentage of waste recycled: 92 percent

When I suggest adding smoke detectors to an alarm system, people often reply with "I already have smoke detectors in my home." Sure you do, but what happens when you're not at home? By the time your neighbors see flames, it's too late. Plus, having a smoke detector as part of your system typically doubles the discount from your insurance company for having a monitored alarm system.

A quick response to a smoke alarm by the Williams Lake Fire Dept. prevented a house fire Friday.

All of the garbage from service calls and installations ends up going back to the office, along with the garbage from the office itself. From there, whatever can be recycled gets sorted out. Since May 2014, I've been keeping track of this sorting by weight. Here are the numbers for May 2014 - Dec 2014:

Garbage: 46 pounds
Paper: 17 pounds
Cardboard: 28.5 pounds
Metal: 43 pounds
Electronics: 133 pounds
Batteries: 46.5 pounds
Percentage of waste recycled: 85 percent

This is why I always wrap batteries in electrical tape. Any tape really, but I tend to have a roll of electrical tape around anyway. It's great to be recycling more and more things, but do so safely. Even though I recycle hundreds of pounds of batteries every year, I've never had an issue thanks to a simple bit of tape.
