Last, but not least, our final highlight of is about the remarkable journey of the International Playing Card Company's former plant in Windsor, Ontario. Built in 1929, this iconic factory was once the heart of Canada's playing card market, printing beloved brands like Bee and Bicycle cards. After years of neglect, the Greater Essex County District School Board embarked on a bold mission to breathe new life into this historic gem.
In 2016, the school board acquired the property and embarked on a groundbreaking project to convert the factory into the James L. Dunn Public School—a K-8 institution and daycare. Led by JPTA, the project was a testament to innovative heritage reconstruction and adaptive reuse. The team meticulously restored the factory's exterior, preserving its designated features under the Ontario Heritage Act, while reimagining the interior to honor its industrial roots.
The result? A stunning blend of past and present, where natural light, functionality, and spatial design create a cutting-edge learning environment. James L. Dunn Public School stands not only as a beacon of education but also as a symbol of community pride, elevating the appreciation of our architectural heritage.
