🌱 Nature’s been at this way longer than us.

Soil builds itself. Water finds its way. Plants know how to thrive. When we try to fight it, we’re always playing catch-up. But when we work with it? Everything flows easier, lasts longer, and actually makes sense.

We don’t outsmart nature—we learn from it. 🌿💡

There are so many ways to help our future Demonstration Garden take root!
Volunteer support
Helps with future planting days, weeding, watering and garden maintenance. It turns hard work into shared community pride.
Financial contributions
Help us tackle big early milestones — transporting boulders, planting trees, building paths, sourcing quality soil and mulch, and so on. These are the “heavy lifting” phases that bring the garden to life.
Both kinds of support are essential.
Both make a difference.
Both help our community grow something beautiful.
Whether you roll up your sleeves or chip in a few dollars — or both — we’re grateful you’re part of the journey. Message us to learn how you can contribute to this green initiative and help this garden grow.

Press Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lake Country Garden Club announces new demonstration garden at Swalwell Park

Lake Country, BC — The Lake Country Garden Club is excited to announce the development of a new Demonstration Garden in partnership with the District of Lake Country. Located in the southeast corner of Swalwell Park, the garden will become a year-round public destination for learning, gathering and celebrating the beauty and resilience of sustainable gardening.

The Demonstration Garden is designed as a “living classroom” that showcases ecologically responsible gardening practices including water-wise planting, FireSmart landscaping, soil-building techniques, edible gardens, and native and pollinator-supporting plants. The space will feature signage, pathways, gathering areas and hands-on opportunities for visitors to learn and participate.

Plans for the Demonstration Garden have been in the works for over a year, with a dedicated task force of Garden Club volunteers ironing out design details, making connections with landscapers and gardeners and envisioning a flourishing future in the heart of Lake Country. “This project aligns with our community values of sustainability, education and beautification, and we are excited to see it come to life,” said District of Lake Country Mayor Blair Ireland. The District of Lake Country has generously provided the location, while the Lake Country Garden Club has taken responsibility to fund, build and maintain the garden for the community.

“This garden is the Garden Club’s gift to our community,” said Amanda Armstrong, task force team lead from the Lake Country Garden Club. “It will be a place where people of all ages can explore, learn and connect with nature. By demonstrating practical, climate-resilient gardening approaches, we hope to inspire home gardeners and create a space where community grows — literally and figuratively.”

Designed by local landscape architecture firms The Field Room and MK Design Group, the Demonstration Garden project will be built in phases over three years. Early site preparation is already underway. Once complete, the garden will host workshops, guided tours, school programs, seasonal events and opportunities for residents to help maintain, plant and contribute to the space.

The project will be funded through a combination of grants, cash donations and in-kind contributions from local businesses and community partners. Donations are gratefully accepted and will directly support plants, soil, hardscaping, signage and construction materials.

The community is invited to follow along as the garden takes shape and to get involved in many ways — volunteering, donating, attending events, sharing seeds and celebrating the transformation of the site from bare ground to a thriving community space.

Did you know "50 to 70% of North American residential water is used for landscaping, most of it to water lawns".

I think there will always be a time and place for lush green turf space, but do you have too much or just want to make a positive change? West Cost Seeds offers some great alternatives! I personally love their Easy Care Groundcover seed crop. 🌾🌿

Transforming lawns into productive garden spaces can replace highly demanding grasses with food, forage for pollinators or even urban organic farming space.

When a tree can be saved and incorporated into a design it is magic! If anyone has been to visit Nic and I we have two beautiful Ash trees in the middle of our deck. It has been pretty special to live under them, but definitely comes with its challenges! Here are some pretty cool examples of people making that work. 🌳 Happy Wednesday everyone!

Instead of chopping down trees or cutting branches, many architects have come up with smart design solutions to avoid disturbing the land during construction.
