I recently found a dramatic black and caramel acrylic pen blank in the UK to pair with black chrome Cyclone rollerball fittings. This hard material required much patience to cut, sand and polish, but the result is impeccable and spectacular. The acrylic is called ‘Triassic lava’. The pen uses readily available, Parker-type refills. This piece will not remain available for long, so act quickly.

While I primarily create artisanal instruments for writing (fountain, rollerball and ballpoint pens and various mechanical pencils), and shaving (brushes and razors), I occasionally make various other hand tools for crafts and kitchens. As with pens and shavewares, I employ both rare and unusual hardwoods, both domestic and tropical. I take custom orders and also show these wares at craft and art sales I attend.

Today I am showing you a seam ripper, an essential tool in sewing baskets. These come with a variety of attachments, for example differently-sized seam rippers, stilettos, mini-scissors and needle threaders. These instruments can be created for a single tool with a pocket clip on the other end, or as a pair of tools, as illustrated in the accompanying photographs. The photos feature a large and small seam ripper and an elegant curly white ash handle.

Please contact me if you are interested in custom-made seam rippers, or other craft and kitchen tools.

This stunning Nordic rollerball pen with Palestinian olive wood on 22Kt gold hardware was recently purchased by Kathleen H. as a gift for her brother. Note the stylized fish on the centre band. The piece was finished with friction polish and it uses readily available, Parker-type refills.

Please note: I will attend the spring sale at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate next weekend, Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 9 am to 3 pm at 2665 mss Avenue, Winnipeg. This is a large and well-run craft sale held each spring and fall.

Recently completed, a ‘Canadiana’ fountain pen with dyed royal purple Karelian curly burch from Estonia on upgrade rhodium hardware with sumptuous 22Kt gold castings. It’s unusual to find rhodium-finished pens these days, but together with the curly birch and gold embellishments, this fountain pen checks all the traditional boxes. Well-cut and well-finished, the piece incorporates a Schmidt ‘converter' (piston-style ink pump) that may be switched out for refill cartridges (sample provided). This piece will not hang around for long so, if interested, please let me know soonest.

A personal medical note

For the past year I have been doing battle with lung cancer, first via chemo- and immuno-therapy, then most recently with serious surgery including removal of a significant portion of one lung. I have been declared ‘cancer free’ and am now in a protracted period of post surgical recovery. For most part I was able to manage my artisanal workshop as well as attend craft/art shows in 2025, and now look forward to more of the same in 2026. To all who continued to show interest and support for Wolverinewood, my heartfelt thanks!

I am back to work in my shop with sales upcoming in April and May. Today I am showing you a Maple Leaf ballpoint pen with a micro-molecular metal (M3) barrel in a Damascus steel pattern coupled with black chrome hardware. The pen also has the typical maple leaf nib ring. The ballpoint is finished to usual Wolverinewood standards: sanded to 12,000 grit, then polished with tripoli and white diamond micro-abrasives. This pen has an all-metal transmission and employs Parker-type refills.
