We recently received the official announcement that the Grey Buffalo Grandfather Wellness Lodge won the Interior Showcase Award as part of the 2023 Prairie Wood Design Awards!

Grey Buffalo Grandfather Wellness Lodge is a rural learning and wellness retreat located at Hillside Beach, Manitoba. It provides a welcoming space for people to connect to the land, learn about Indigenous Traditions and Ceremonies, and participate in cultural activities.

So happy that people are starting to move in.

A 22-unit tiny homes project in downtown Winnipeg aimed at people transitioning out of homelessness into permanent housing is getting ready to welcome residents.

Recently we were invited by the UWCRC to a social evening that brought donors and Ukrainian refugees together. The UWCRC had led an initiative, with the help of donors and New Journey Housing, that saw 15 Ukrainian families move into affordable housing in the Downtown Commons on Colony Street.

Donations received by UWCRC have augmented the province’s Temporary Assistance Program, which offers short term help for rent and groceries. The challenge now is for UWCRC and New Journey Housing to keep the families on their feet until they’re able to access any other available employment and rent assistance programs as they work on securing permanent employment and housing for themselves.
Donations were collected through the Vasyl (Bill) Balan International Students from Ukraine Bursary, a fund that the U of W created in memory of the late Vasyl (Bill) Balan, former University of Winnipeg Associate Vice-President, Operations and Vice-President Finance and Administration. The bursary was in recognition of his tremendous legacy at the U of W, his family’s Ukrainian homeland, and the dire need of present-day Ukrainians. Donations are still welcome to this fund as there are still people in need.

In 2015 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action included the following: “83. We call upon the Canada Council for the Arts to establish, as a funding priority, a strategy for Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to undertake collaborative projects and produce works that contribute to the reconciliation process.”

At Cibinel Architecture we are proud to be a part of the Qaumajuq at the Winnipeg Art Gallery which gives a physical space in which the TRC Calls to Action can be manifested.

Last week the Prairie Design Awards recognized Qaumajuq with a “Recent Work - Award of Excellence”. We were humbled to accept the award. Thank you to our associate firm, Michael Maltzan Architecture and the sub consultant firms (Crosier Kilgour & Partners, Guy Nordenson & Associates, Epp Siepman Engineering, MCW, Stantec, WSP, HTFC, LAM Partners in Architectural Lighting Design, RWDI, and PCL Construction) who worked together to make it a reality. And thank you especially to the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Indigenous and Inuit leadership who trusted and guided us.
