Why mix our own drywall mud instead of just buying a bucket of premixed?
Like I mention in the video, being able to mix it ourselves means we can control the consistency depending on exactly what we’re doing. Thicker for filling and repairs, a little looser when the job calls for it.
But there are a few other advantages too.
Setting compound hardens through a chemical reaction rather than simply air drying, which means it sets much faster and lets us keep moving through repairs without waiting forever between coats. It also tends to shrink less in deeper fills, works well for larger repairs, and gives you a strong, solid repair once it sets.
We can also mix exactly as much as we need instead of opening another bucket, and the unused powder stores extremely well as long as it stays dry.
That doesn’t mean premixed mud is useless. We still like it for certain finishing coats because it feathers and sands beautifully (in the video I said the mud I was mixing would be easier to sand. I meant it takes less physical effort. Premixed gives a smoother finish, especially on fresh builds). Different products for different stages of the job.
A lot of the finished paint job comes down to what happens before the paint ever touches the wall.
