A basement upgraded to spray foam has the most dramatic impact on the energy efficiency and comfort level of a home in Manitoba. The insulating effects of adding 3.5” of 2lb foam to the foundation is unmatched by any other product. It creates a solid barrier that thermally isolates the below foundation temperature from impacting the interior space of the home. A cold untreated basement actually causes stack pressure where the chill of the basement creates an upward temperature drive that pushes heat upwards and eventually out of the house. By contrast, foam reduces stack pressure, basement are far more comfortable, the demands on heating and cooling are reduced due to a more stable temperature and most importantly with less demands comes energy savings which is a positive payback on this upgrade. As we Foamers say, “spray today, save for ever.”

The image depicts the embedded floor joists that are at least 4 inches securely integrated into the top of the concrete foundation. The challenge posed here is that there is a two-foot cantilever extending beyond the foundation, which cannot be accurately foamed. Furthermore, the concrete foundation creates a critical blind spot in front of it, where the foam is unable to seal the floor of the cantilever. So the front face of the foundation is foamed, including sealing the top gap of the framing but leaving an opening to allow warm conditioned air to filter out into the cantilever to prevent cold floors. Ideally, the cantilever would be opened up to allow access as seen in the second image. Either by opening the floor inside or removing the cantilever floor from the outside.

A group of Foamers took time off to switch to rods! It was a very different experience. Up at 5am with the “chef’s bell” announcing breakfast! The guides were already getting the boats ready and then the morning session went to 11:30am. Back to the lodge to unload, while the guides cleaned, dressed and packaged the catch.

Not everyone can invest in the Full Monty but spray foaming the entire basement foundation and rim has the greatest impact on the dynamics, environment, comfort level and energy efficiency in your home. When costs determine otherwise, the rim joist pockets are the linchpin, with the greatest area of leakage, frosting and potential mold. So spray foam this section! However, you also need to take it to the next level by using the foam to seal the top plate of the stud wall to the basement wall. (Sealing this gap simply can’t be done effectively with the poly vapour barrier). As a result, warm conditioned air can slip down inside this wall cavity causing the wall to frost during the winter months. This leads to homeowners grief, damage and eventually a costly demolition and repair. Yes, it happens every year and we get this call. This missed detail keeps us busy! See photos.
