YEAR TEN: 2024

2024 and we are no more.

It’s been an absolute privilege to serve communities big and small across the prairies. We thank each and everyone who supported, encouraged, collaborated and gave us an opportunity to make change. It was an amazing rollercoaster ride- filled with ups and downs, but will forever be grateful for the opportunity to practice landscape architecture, finding our niche in recreation, trails, play, learning, engagement and climate resilient landscapes. The end of a decade marks the beginning of new opportunities. While we bid farewell to this chapter, we look forward to what the future holds. We wish all of our amazing team members well and are excited for their future endeavors.

YEAR TEN: 2023
Staffing and stamina have dwindled and it’s taking us a little longer to reflect and post.

This year we invested substantially in our staff and have undertaken many strategic initiatives, courses and seminars including reconciliation, health and safety, project management, marketing, and IAP2. We got strategic and did planning, leadership training, time management and some PDX and disc assessments to ensure our team was learning, re-learning, developing and growing. We had many fun adventures and countless happy hour laughs.

All the while we were busy working with communities developing master plans, conducting engagement sessions, working with many of schools and daycares on a variety of creative nature play and learning spaces and developing climate resilient options for municipalities. We had the privilege of collaborating with Shoal Lake 40 and Nestor Falls Sioux Narrows again and several other municipalities. It’s been such a privilege and joy to collaborate for positive community change.

YEAR NINE: 2022 Another busy year, with a diversity of projects from feasibility studies, schools, speaking engagements, Parks, glamping, riparian landscapes, constructed wetlands and trails (our most northern project yet!). We collaborate with many folks in both French and English to bring place based designs from ideation to reality. It’s so exciting to see transformative change in communities big and small.

YEAR EIGHT: 2021

Another whirlwind year filled to the brim with thrilling projects, incredible clients, and talented collaborators. It’s in those creative partnerships where the real magic unfolds. 🪄Even behind some protective masks.  😷 Massive thanks to everyone who joined in on the fun!

At landED, things were heating up as we welcomed aboard some brilliant minds from the education realm. Their multidisciplinary expertise added a whole new dimension to our studio. We had the privilege of applying our land-based knowledge to daycare spaces, multiple school projects, and breathtaking trails.

And guess what? We were also honored to receive the award and thrilled to be named a finalist for the Women Entrepreneur of the Year Award. 🏆💼

YEAR SEVEN: 2020
🌿 Even with our firm already primed for remote work, the year still presented a formidable array of challenges. Like much of the world, we navigated the delicate balance of homeschooling, contended with deferred projects, grappled with higher construction prices, and encountered delays or shortages in materials and employees. Despite these hurdles, our small landscape architecture firm found itself bustling with activity.

Throughout the trials brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we not only persevered but flourished. 🌸 Our dedication to excellence remained steadfast as we seized opportunities to collaborate with numerous schools, municipalities, and First Nations, contributing to the creation of vibrant, sustainable spaces that enrich communities far and wide. 🏞️

While our transition to remote work was seamless, our priority remained ensuring the well-being and motivation of our dedicated staff amidst uncertainty. Their unwavering commitment and hard work fueled our progress. However, stretched payment timelines pushed our resilience to its limits.

As we bid adieu to 2020, our hearts overflow with gratitude for the unwavering support of our clients, partners, and team. Here’s to surmounting challenges, embracing growth, and continuing to craft landscapes that leave an enduring impact in the year ahead! 🌱

Year Three brought with it our first encounter with the challenges of economic downturns, testing the resilience of our small business. Despite facing headwinds, we remained steadfast in our commitment to delivering excellence on every project we undertook.

As the economic landscape shifted, we adapted, getting smaller in size but not in spirit. Our team rallied together, drawing on our collective strengths and expertise to navigate through uncertain times. Together, we weathered the storm, emerging stronger and more determined than ever before.

We continued to lend our expertise to a diverse array of projects, from condominium sites to elderly person care homes. In addition to our core projects, we embarked on a unique collaboration with historians and artists for the Winnipeg Strike Design competition. This partnership wasn't merely about design; it was an exploration of activist narratives woven into the fabric of the historic exchange district. Competitions and collaborative work on a multi-disciplinary team was a great exercise to merge our passion for design while elevating the voices of the people.

Year Three taught us invaluable lessons in business, resilience, and the power of teamwork. It reinforced the importance of staying true to our roots, amplifying the voices otherwise unheard and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. As we look ahead, we do so with gratitude for the journey thus far and a renewed sense of purpose. Here's to weathering storms, overcoming obstacles, highlighting injustice and emerging stronger on the other side. 🌱

Year Two brought new collaborations, fresh faces, and a plethora of exciting projects that stretched from Roblin to Toronto. Our team expanded, brimming with talent and enthusiasm, ready to tackle every challenge that came our way.

Diversity became our mantra as we delved into projects that spanned generations, from designing inclusive spaces for the elderly to crafting environments that catered to the youngest among us. From Elderly Care Homes to partnerships with organizations like , we embarked on a journey to create spaces that embraced everyone, regardless of age or ability.

But it wasn't just about reimagining spaces for specific demographics; it was about challenging the status quo and pushing boundaries. Our work with school yards was a testament to this ethos, as we set out to redefine what a typical school yard could be. Collaborating with school divisions like and , we established baseline standards for green spaces that fostered learning, play, and connection with nature.

Year Two was a year of innovation, exploration, and setting new standards. As we look back on the projects that defined this chapter of our journey, we're filled with gratitude for the opportunities, the partnerships, and the growth that came with them. Here's to another year of pushing boundaries and creating spaces that inspire and delight. 🌱

Reflecting on the memories of the early years of LBLA, it's truly remarkable to see how far we've come. Our journey began in the Little Studio, rooted in determination and fueled by passion. With just a laptop, lack of childcare and unwavering drive, our founder embarked on a mission to build something extraordinary.

Our very first client, , holds a special place in our hearts. As a non-profit with a visionary goal of connecting the through each treaty area in Manitoba, they entrusted us with a monumental task. The project was massive and challenging, but it ignited our creativity and inspired us to push boundaries.

With each contract secured, we grew stronger, and our team expanded. Welcoming our first summer student was a milestone moment, bringing fresh perspectives and boundless energy to our work. Together, we hiked, designed, and planned new adventures, laying the foundation for what would become our signature approach.

Looking back, those early days were filled with uncertainty and excitement, but above all, they were filled with hope. Hope for a future where landscapes would not only be designed but would tell stories, connect communities, and leave a lasting legacy. And as we continue to grow and evolve, that hope remains at the core of everything we do. Here's to Year One, where dreams took root and possibilities blossomed. 🌿
