Video | Upper Fort Garry, Winnipeg, MB
Spanning more than 400 feet of steel and light, this video highlights the heritage wall built to mark the height, depth, and exact location of Upper Fort Garry’s west wall, demolished in the 1880s.
Its layered design etches three continuous storylines into the metal, tracing the complex and evolving history of Western Canada and Upper Fort Garry itself.
Read from left to right, the wall begins with the presence of First Nations, Métis communities, and the fur trade. It then moves through the arrival of European settlers and the pivotal events surrounding Red River’s entry into Confederation.
Finally, it captures the transformation of the prairies, the building of Winnipeg, and the growth of northern Manitoba.
