A totally rad yellow rad! Don’t be afraid of colour. We did all the wall, baseboards, crown, doors and the rad in high gloss yellow. Contrary to what you may think, it’s a very relaxing space.

100 years old (probably) mahogany handrails receiving some much needed love. Why I didn’t take better before, during and after photos I have no clue, but you get the idea. 🤷🏽‍♂️ There’s actually one more quick light sand and top coat to do but it’s looking so much better already. We wanted to salvage what we could of the old stain where possible so in those areas we sanded with 220, touched up with linseed paint (Verona Brown) and top coated with Tonkinois Varnish.
In other areas we sanded more aggressively, sometimes right down to the beautiful mahogany and then used the linseed paint as a wiping stain, followed by the Varnish. I learned a few shading tricks using the paint for this purpose, leaving it more transparent in some areas and darker in others. The top coat is probably the most forgiving and luxurious varnish in existence. It’s not cheap but it’s worth it. Truly amazing stuff. More pics to come. .restoration

Pro tip…If your outdoor wood surfaces start to weather, all you need to do is give it a good scrub and rinse with something like linseed oil soap. This board only took about one minute to clean and it looks great. Once you’ve cleaned everything WITHOUT A PRESSURE WASHER, let it dry and coat it with your choice of Allbacks linseed oil, linseed paint or a mix of linseed oil and pine tar.

Viola! We asked the lovely neighbours across the street (who have a beautiful native plant garden btw), what colour they thought might suit the front doors, since they’re the ones who have to look at the building everyday. This was their pick and I must say they nailed it. The owners of this building have a few more projects coming up to help with the facelift including a new front overhang, repairing the sidewalk and some landscaping. I could envision some climbing green vines on the face of the white brick too. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Always nice seeing an old tired building rejuvenated like this.

These steps received a healthy dose of tar & oil, but they’re still thirsty. We’ve decided to leave the next coat until next year since there’s enough in the wood to protect them over the winter. .restoration

Pine tar. , linseed oil and...Curling brooms??? BEHOLD our secret tarring applicator. These old brooms are made of horse hair and can take the heat better than synthetic bristles. If you’ve got a few of these old puppies kicking around in your garage let me know. .restoration

We’ve estimated close to 500 individual window panes on this beautiful 100+ year old house in River Heights. Right now we’re working on the storm windows and screens. It’s tedious but these wood windows are in great shape and well worth maintaining.

Lifetime Wood Treatment + Auson light pine tar + Allback boiled linseed oil = 🤤 This is the first deck we’ve added the Lifetime wood treatment for extra UV and rot protection. The decking matched nicely with the existing finish on the railings and trim. .restoration
