Spring has officially hit Manitoba, and you know what they say, “Work hard, BBQ hard!”, right? 😏

A few snapshots from the past little while: work out in cottage country and up north in Gillam, a crisp spring evening get-together with some of our crews and their families (shoutout to Kerry for manning three smokers at once!), our first office BBQ in the new multi-purpose room after the wind chased us inside, and of course… can’t have smoky dogs without office dogs! 🌭🐶 Ozzie, Maisy, Moose and Boone have all been taking turns holding down the fort lately.

Don’t forget the moms in your life this weekend! 💐💕 Recently, Zach and Chris got to show their moms, Risa and Moni, around the office and give them a sneak peek at our renovation.

Family businesses are built on more than jobsites, tools and long hours. Behind them are the people who’ve answered phone calls after tough days, celebrated the wins, supported the risks and helped carry the weight of everything in between.

Skilled trades workers help build and maintain the spaces we all rely on every day. From hospitals and schools to offices, factories and homes, we rely on the people who know how to build, repair and maintain these spaces. National Skilled Trades Day is a chance to recognize those individuals.

Across Canada, there’s growing investment in apprenticeship and skilled trades training as demand for the industry continues to grow. There’s never been a better time to explore a career in the trades.

Today, we’re celebrating the people on the tools, and the generations before them, who helped build this industry here at home.

Toolbox Talk time for our service department! ☕️ 🧰

Every two weeks, the crew gets together to talk through safety, current work, and what’s coming next. It’s where experience gets shared, details get sorted out, and everyone heads back into the field on the same page.

Led by Tom on the far left, this is some of the team you’ll see out on our service calls across the city. Not everyone was able to make this one, but shoutout to Matt, Dan, Nick, Sam and Trevor for letting us sit in.

Manitoba Hydro Place and Wawanesa Tower. Two projects along Graham Avenue that represent different eras of our work in downtown Winnipeg.

Built years apart by different generations of our team, they’re the kind of buildings people pass by without thinking twice, but for us, they’re a reminder of the commercial mechanical work we’ve been delivering in Manitoba for decades.

They’re spaces relied on by Manitobans every day. We just happen to know what’s behind the walls, and we’re proud to have played a role in that.

A quick stop at the Estimating department and a shared laugh on the way through to the back shop. 😄

Even a short walk to check on things in the back often turns into touching base with Estimating, trading updates, and keeping everyone connected. It’s a small moment, but it’s part of how projects move forward. Conversations between teams, questions answered quickly, and a bit of humour mixed in along the way.

From a trip to Hawaii 🌴 to classic Manitoba moments on the ice 🎣, snowmobiles in the snow, and plenty of loyal four-legged companions, March brought in some great photo submissions from the Derksen crew!

Most people never see the work that keeps a building and its mechanical systems running, but here’s a sneak peek! 👀

One of our plumbers recently repaired this boosted domestic cold water line serving a high-rise residential building. Work like this is a critical part of commercial plumbing and building infrastructure, ensuring residents always have reliable water service.

Because water shutdown windows were limited, the repair was completed overnight to minimize disruption for residents.

This is the kind of essential behind-the-scenes mechanical work that keeps buildings operating safely and reliably.
