Welcome Andria to the ft3 team! Andria is our newest Architectural Intern and we are so incredibly pleased to have her share her ideas and unique design perspective on all that is design.

Originally from Indonesia, she moved to Canada to pursue her master’s degree in Architecture for which she won the Manitoba Architects Association prize for best thesis in 2021.

'Tales of the People: Folklores and Heritage Preservation in a Multicultural City' is a design thesis project that explores folklore and storytelling as forms of cultural exchange, sustainability, and community-building. The collection and analysis of stories inform the design of a new multicultural storytelling venue to inspire hope among immigrants and shape a more inclusive city while preserving a historic building in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. The research involves artistic interpretations of folklore, and architectural translations of traditional forms of storytelling, including puppetry, that preserve and promote local communities.

A fun fact about Andria is that she loves collecting rocks whenever she travels.

We continue to feature our favorite projects for our 45th anniversary celebration! Today we reflect on Thermëa by Nordic Spa-Nature.
“Located on the edge of Crescent Drive Golf Course in Winnipeg, Spa Thermea is a outdoor thermal experience that offers heat therapy treatment as well as indoor spa services. The spa welcomes visitors to pause, reflect and relax as they move in and out of the pools, cold plunge, sauna and steam rooms to activate the thermal cycle.
.
The project explores the relationship between inside and outside space and created the opportunity for the 3 disciplines of architecture, interior design and landscape architecture to closely collaborate together. Through the use of natural materials, connecting views, an intimacy of scale, and a sensitivity for adjacency - spa patrons navigate through the procession of indoor and outdoor areas. Considerations for luxury and comfort were balanced with the necessities of durability and safety.
Each of the senses are engaged in the diverse variety of environments – the falling water sound of the basalt columns, the humidity of the wet rooms, the warmth of the saunas, the taste of the herb infused water in the relaxation room and the smell of the crackling fire outdoors. It was a rewarding experience to share these design considerations with local Winnipeggers and tourists alike who flock to this establishment for rest and rejuvenation.” - Erika Sammons, Associate + Professional Interior Designer

ft3 turns 45 this week! To celebrate this occasion, we are featuring some of our favourite projects. Today’s project was selected by two of our team members - St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church Parish Hall
“I chose this project because of the detail put into the unique masonry design on the exterior, but primarily because of the relevance and impact it has in the community. As someone who lives only minutes away, I know how widely used the facility is for socials, receptions, sporting events. Whenever I mention to a friend or someone in the area where I am employed, I can proudly mention that building is designed by ft3. As well, having the opportunity to play (and win!) our little ft3 basketball tournament last year - might have given this an advantage!” -Rex Bergado, Architectural Technologist
“This project chose to follow a Green Mandate and achieved LEED-Canada NC Silver certification in November 2018. I have not had the opportunity to work on many projects where the client chooses to pursue green building certification through their own initiative.
Three of my favourite building features are:
The building’s operational CO2 emissions from natural gas and electricity consumption are offset with a purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). These RECs are equivalent to offsetting 100% of Petrus Hall’s CO2 emissions for the first 10 years of operation (based on modelled annual energy consumption and emission factor calculations from Canada Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building Standard v1).
The carpet tile in the coat room is made from discarded nylon fishing nets recovered in the Philippines. The collection of these discarded nets provides fair trade income generation for local fishing villages and reduces harm to aquatic life in the unique double barrier reef ecosystem.
Use of locally sourced Tyndall stone on the façade. Quarried only 53 km from the building site, this durable natural material contains a rich array of aquatic fossils from Manitoba’s ancient past.” -Jennifer Atherton, Sustainable Building Analyst

As our 45th anniversary celebration continues, today we feature Lord Nelson School ✏️
“Hard to pick a favourite project but I am very fond of the Lord Nelson gymnasium addition that we completed in 2012. It was the first project that I worked on from schematic design and throughout construction. The design group and client were so pleasant to work with and seeing how much the kids enjoyed their new space was great to see!” - Igor Cabrilo, Architect

“My favorite project was one of the first that I worked on when I joined ft3 - The North West Company. It is my favourite project because of the company’s history, the building’s history, the large carpet pattern that runs throughout the building, the boardroom that utilized a giant original leather map as a feature wall, the main floor gallery that housed many pieces of art and artifacts from the company’s vast archive and the design directive that the CEO and President gave me, ‘The design must be humble’.”
- Lisa Shelton, Professional Interior Designer
