The way the wind whips off the pond in the back of the house and between the two houses is crazy! There was hardly a breeze today and I was having a hard time holding onto the loose shingles on the roof. The high sustained winds from the storm last week loosened off a large area of shingles. I carefully removed the shingles one by one, which was difficult and time consuming. A great number of the fasteners had just pulled through the shingle. Then I reinstalled them, adding additional nails for better holding power. It was a beautiful sunny spring day in Winnipeg!

Just because your insurance company sends out their “preferred vendor”, it doesn’t mean the job will be done properly. This is what I found today. Be careful who you hire.

The shingles on this roof are not very old. The new owners wanted the roof inspected for peace of mind. On the whole, it’s a nice looking job. Except they reused a 30 year old rubber flashing that will fail in the next few years. Why would they reinstall a worn $10 item? Roofers are funny dudes.

Details like this on a roof tell me that the installer has little pride in the finished product. Roofs don’t get any easier than this one, and they felt the need to cut corners.

The shingles on this house are no longer available. I use a special installation method to blend materials that are available into the existing roof. The area at the beginning of the video is the area that I repaired. The other 2 areas were repaired by other contractors. This roof still has another 10 years of life left. Do you want a repair that blends in and

On some of the better quality skylights, there will be a channel designed to collect condensation. This model has a drain in each lower corner to allow water that has collected from the condensation to drain to the outside of the skylight flashing and curb. This system works well as long as the drain hole is not plugged with dead insects or other debris. They are notorious for freezing over in the winter. People will think that their roof is leaking or they have a problem with the skylight itself. In this case, this skylight has never leaked in the rain, but leaked this winter when we had a real cold snap. I suspect that the drain was frozen and the drip channel simply overflowed briefly.
