Cross Sections of Wood Tells a Story 📖🌲

That mix of creamy tan, warm browns, and deep red streaks isn’t random. Every ring and colour tells a story of growth, stress, and time.

The lighter outer wood (sapwood) is the tree’s active plumbing, moving water and nutrients up and down the tree.

The darker inner wood (heartwood) forms as the tree ages, filling with naturally occurring compounds and hormones such as tannins and phenols that deepen the colour in most species.

In Manitoba Maple, the reddish streaks come from the heartwood reacting to stress or injury, created from tannins mixing with iron from the soil. Tannins are a naturally occurring chemical that act as a defense system against decay while Iron is a nutrient found in soil. A chemical reaction between these two compounds creates the red streaking.

Notice the advanced heart rot from decay fungus and insect activity.

In this case, a combination of heavy horizontal elongated stems and decay led to a large stem failure.

🌳 Lending a Hand with Heart ❤️ – Woodstock, Ontario

Today, our team at Elevation Tree Service had the opportunity to give back in a small but meaningful way. We volunteered our time to prune and beautify several trees and shrubs for a local customer who’s currently facing a cancer diagnosis.

We believe that a well-kept yard can lift spirits, even during the toughest times. It was our honour to bring some care and green back into their space, right here in Woodstock.
