🏔️🌍 Thank you to everyone who joined the GEO Mountains and WOCAT - World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies session during the Group on Earth Observations Symposium in Geneva!

It was wonderful to connect with colleagues, partners, and practitioners working on Earth Observation, land restoration, and sustainable mountain development.

The session sparked important discussions around:

🌱 Land restoration & Land Degradation Neutrality
🤝 Capacity development and collaboration

🌎⛰️ Interested in learning more about climate modelling across the Andes?

Applications are now open for the CASCADA Workshop (Convection-permitting Atmospheric Science and Climate Modeling Across the Andes), taking place at NSF NCAR in Boulder, Colorado.

The workshop will provide hands-on training in km-scale climate modelling over South America, including:
💧 Hydrosphere & cryosphere applications
⛈️ Convective storm processes
🌱 Land-surface interactions
🤝 Tutorials, tools & collaborative activities

Open to senior undergraduate, MSc, PhD students, and early-career researchers.

One of Peru’s best-monitored glaciers is close to disappearing.

New GEO Mountains-supported research sheds light on the rapid retreat of Yanamarey Glacier in the Cordillera Blanca – and why it matters.

Glaciers in Peru can provide up to 40% of water during dry periods. But tracking their decline is complex, costly, and often dangerous.

With support from a GEO Mountains Small Grant, researchers are combining field science, satellite data, and artificial intelligence to improve glacier monitoring and build a clearer picture of change.

🏔️🌍 How can national climate plans better reflect the realities of mountain regions?

A recent meeting of GEO Mountains Task Group 3 is helping shape a new technical supplement to the UNFCCC National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Technical Guidelines – with a focus on mountain adaptation.

🤝 Experts from research, policy, and practice are working together to create a resource that is:
• Practical and accessible for decision-makers.
• Grounded in real-world case studies.
• Focused on key mountain challenges like hazards, water, ecosystems, and livelihoods.

The goal? To support countries in integrating mountain-specific risks and solutions into their adaptation planning.

❄️🏔️ Help Shape Positive Futures for Landscapes Beyond Ice: Join the Global BeyondIceFutures Survey

Glaciers around the world are retreating at unprecedented rates. As the ice pulls back, entirely new landscapes are emerging in its wake. These recently deglaciated areas are among the youngest ecosystems on Earth – dynamic, rapidly evolving, and full of unanswered scientific questions.

The Mountain Research Initiative funded BeyondIceFutures project invites scientists across disciplines to take a quick 5–10 minute survey. 🌱 Your expertise will help identify research gaps, guide positive futures for these landscapes, and feed into a synthesis workshop planned for October 2026.

What can a GEO Mountains Small Grant achieve? Quite a lot. 🌍🏔️

The REACH project has delivered a comprehensive regional-scale assessment of rock and ice avalanche risk to hydropower infrastructure in High Mountain Asia.

The team compiled a dataset of almost 1,900 hydropower projects and identified installations exposed to cascading mountain hazards, providing a valuable resource for safer planning and disaster risk reduction.
