The sense of community, collaboration, are precisely the moral principles underpinning a true circular economy made of sharing of resources, services and space. In this respect, formal cities would have a great deal to learn from informal ones

Today, over a billion and a half people live in informal settlements and by 2030 that figure could soar to 3 billion. So, the issue of future circular cities is inexorably linked to the development of slums and their economy.

Today, we did it in Cape Town, South Africa, welcoming Swiss Federal Council member Ignazio Cassis to the site of our Empower project. There to meet him was community leader, Phumezo Tsibanto, one of the first beneficiaries and leading ambassadors of the project.

Our Reactivate Sarajevo Urban Transformation project is picking up steam. Opening the latest phase of an initiative that has been ongoing since 2014, we hosted a workshop that brought together the City of Zürich (Stadt Zürich), the City of Sarajevo (Grad Sarajevo - gradska administracija), Canton Sarajevo (Institute for Planning of Development), the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Development (Staatssekretariat für Wirtschaft SECO), the University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Architecture (Arhitektonski fakultet Sarajevo), and other branches within our ETH Zürich context, including the ETH Wohnforum — ETH CASE.

Planting the seeds for future collaboration - both in terms of facilitation and direct engagement - we began the relationship by establishing a solid foundation: sharing expertise and knowledge. We look forward to announcing the various projects and plans that will emerge from this. Stay tuned!
