🌧️ Can rainwater become a reliable resource for drylands?

In Pakistan’s rain-fed Potohar region, smallholder farmers have long depended on unpredictable rainfall to grow food and sustain livelihoods.

IWMI is helping communities turn rainwater into a dependable source for agriculture by combining existing rainwater ponds with solar-powered, high-efficiency irrigation systems.

For farmers, this means:
💧 Reliable irrigation using harvested rainwater
🌱 Better harvests and food security
📈 Increased income and resilience
📊 Smarter water use with soil moisture sensors

How can education help build healthier relationships between people and nature?

A new paper from IUCN, “We Are Nature: Nature-based Education for Planetary Health”, explores how placing nature at the centre of learning can help future generations address challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, water pollution and water insecurity.

One example highlighted is a “watershed curriculum”, where school subjects connect to the health and management of the local watershed.

The paper also calls for:
▪️ Updated education frameworks
▪️ Greener learning spaces
▪️ Stronger political commitment
▪️ Better support for educators

In the mountain villages of Mansehra, northern Pakistan, access to water once meant hours of climbing steep and slippery slopes to reach fast-flowing streams below.

Today, gravity-powered hydraulic ram pumps installed by IWMI are transforming lives — delivering water to 400 households and 2,340 residents without electricity or fuel.

Beyond the technology, this is a story about dignity, opportunity and resilience:
🌱 Women cultivating kitchen gardens for the first time
📚 Children attending school more regularly
🏔 Communities moving beyond subsistence
