We put AirMarker to the test.
Recently, our CEO had the opportunity to participate in a mountain rescue exercise in Mallnitz, Carinthia, together with local rescue and emergency professionals.

One question we hear again and again:
Can AirMarker rise through trees? 🌲

During the exercise, we had the opportunity to test exactly that under realistic conditions (not for the first time).
The result: Yes. AirMarker successfully rose through the trees. If there is a small window between the leafs, the balloon will find it's way.

This is exactly why field testing matters.
Questions from the market become practical tests.
Practical tests create learning.
And learning helps us improve.

We were also joined by ORF Kärnten, who documented the exercise and spoke with the professionals involved.

More and more people are discovering the mountains.
That's a great thing.
But recent figures from Switzerland also show another side of the story: mountain rescue teams are responding to an increasing number of emergencies.
And every rescue operation requires people, time, resources and the right conditions.
It is easy to think:
"If something happens, I'll just call for help."
But what if:
📵 There is no mobile coverage?
🌲 You are difficult to see?
🌙 It gets dark?
🏔️ You are in complex terrain?
📍 Your exact location is difficult to communicate?
Rescue should never be taken for granted.
Preparation doesn't mean expecting the worst.

AI can plan your route. Can it read the mountain?

A recent case in the Swiss Alps has sparked an important discussion: hikers reportedly followed an AI-recommended route that led them onto a dangerous glacier section.

It may sound unusual. But the underlying issue is very real:

Technology can provide information. It cannot replace judgement.

Mountain conditions can change rapidly.

A route that looks perfectly reasonable on a screen may be very different on the ground:

❄️ Open crevasses
🧊 Bare ice
🪨 Rockfall
🌫️ Changing visibility
🌡️ Rapidly changing conditions

And sometimes, the biggest risk is not a lack of information - but overconfidence in the information we have.

AI, GPS, apps and digital maps can be incredibly useful tools.

But they should complement, not replace:

experience. preparation. local knowledge.

And there is another question every outdoor enthusiast should ask before setting off:

If something goes wrong, how will I be found?
