At the 13th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2012, with "Common Ground" as its theme, Günther Vogt's exhibition piece took Venice as the starting point. It examined public space, understood as being the commons, caught in the conflict between resource and utilization. By interviewing the residents and tourists in various public places all over Venice, the intention was to present a subjective perception of the local "resource" and its regulatory framework concerning everyday life. Translated into the kiosk's language, passersby offered the results in newspapers, maps, postcards, etc. As the smallest building in the city, the kiosk is open to the broadest possible section of the general public. It thereby established a dialogue between the city and the Biennale, as admission was free to all - firmly rooted in the common ground of the city.

M+ Kowloon

The landscape concept for M+ engages the broad geologic and botanical history of Hong Kong and the unmatched location and prospect of the site itself. Regionally, granitic, sedimentary, volcanic rocks morphologies are formed by typical tropical weathering. This cycle generates a distinct range of erosive habits in the rocks, notably uniform jointing patterns in each rock class, a response producing tough fissures often occupied with a surprising degree of plant life. The M+ concept also calls on the emphatically urban nature of the contemporary phytogeography of Hong Kong - the modern geology of the site. The interplay of these fundamental elements - water, rock, and flora - produces a range of interacting but independent spaces. Materials and plant palettes recur subtly modified throughout the scheme, integrating the succession of areas while also expressing the versatility of local elements.

In the midst of a residential neighbourhood, the remains of the former spinning works and silk mills still refer to the industrial history of the town. The contrast formed by the old industrial architecture and the new buildings results a long oblong courtyard enclosed on three sides.

The open courtyard situated on a higher level is accessed by narrow entrances. Owing to the slight incline of the adjacent streets, the level and the direct access to the courtyard changes. On the basis of its urban context, the project refers to the public space rather than to the garden or park. The themes of this space feature a staged landscape with elements taken from the town and country. As typical alley trees, the plane trees serve as a reference. However, they were grown in the tree nursery without supports in order to give them special forms to distinguish them from the usual street tree quality.

The slightly modulated ground recalls the hilly countryside surrounding St. Gallen. The wind is a given force that creates a certain momentum.

The design of the areas surrounding the new Bauhaus Museum is derived from the multi-layered demands of use. They combine the diverse neighbouring cultural institutions as well as the adjacent Weimarhallenpark not only formally but also physically into a quarter and offer plenty of space for culture, encounters and communication.

The architectural structure of the Badisches Staatstheater sets it apart from the surrounding buildings and thus eludes the urban order of Südstadt. As an equivalent to the premises of the new Staatstheater, the design creates a calm, barrier-free and multifunctional ensemble of open spaces through a clear spatial separation. Long benches on the north and south sides open up views across the square. The water cloud in front of the café and the large staircase invites visitors to linger. Mobile seating allows visitors to choose their own seats on or next to the stage. The design creates a sustainable place for an open and communicative society with a strong signal effect: Aperta spatium as an impulse generator for the next step in urban development.
